Trump More Likely To Be Convicted If Giuliani Runs Impeachment Defense, Says Karl Rove

Topline

President Trump’s odds of being convicted will be higher if Rudy Giuliani leads his impeachment defense, Republican strategist Karl Rove said after ABC News reported that the president’s personal attorney is part of the legal team for Trump’s Senate trial.

Key Facts

“I think it’s all going to boil down to what the president’s defense is,” Rove, a former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to George W. Bush, told Fox News on Sunday of the president’s chances at the upcoming Senate impeachment trial.

Rove argued that Giuliani has “charted a very bad course in the morning papers” since the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol based on his suggestion that Trump couldn’t have incited the riot because the president’s widely debunked voter fraud claims are true.

“Those charges and the so-called experts that the campaign has mustered to advocate have been rejected by 50 states with judges appointed by President Trump, [Barack] Obama, [George W.] Bush, [Bill] Clinton, and I think even one [Ronald] Reagan justice,” said Rove, suggesting that hinging the president’s defense on this argument “raises the likelihood” a number of GOP senators will vote to convict Trump.

Chief Critic

“With the Rudy Giuliani defense there is a strong likelihood that more than 17 Republicans will, because essentially that argument is, this was justified,” said Rove. “The attack on the Capitol and the attempt to end the Congressional hearing on certifying the election was justified because all these charges are true. Frankly, they are not.”

Key Background

Giuliani, who led many of Trump’s failed voter fraud challenges after he lost the election, told ABC News on Saturday that he’s preparing to argue that the Trump camp’s unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud negate the allegation of incitement. “I’m involved right now … that’s what I’m working on,” said Giuliani, who was spotted at the White House hours after the interview with ABC News. Giuliani, the White House and the Trump campaign could not immediately be reached by Forbes for comment.

Crucial Quote

“They basically claimed that anytime [Trump] says voter fraud, voter fraud—or I do, or anybody else—we’re inciting violence; that those words are fighting words because it’s totally untrue,” Giuliani told ABC News. “Well, if you can prove that it’s true, or at least true enough so it’s a legitimate viewpoint, then they are no longer fighting words.”

Tangent

The former New York City mayor introduced Trump at the rally that devolved into the Capitol siege on Jan. 6. During his speech, Giuliani urged an already rowdy crowd to engage in “trial by combat,” which he has since claimed was a reference to the television series “Game of Thrones.”
