Trump Says He’s Pulling The Republican Convention From North Carolina

President Trump announced Tuesday evening that he’s pulling the Republican convention from its planned site in North Carolina after Governor Roy refused to guarantee full occupancy at the Spectrum Arena in Charlotte.

KEY FACTS

Cooper rejected the GOP’s plans for a full-scale convention on Tuesday, stating “the people of North Carolina do not know what the status of COVID-19 will be in August, so planning for a scaled-down convention with fewer people, social distancing and face coverings is a necessity.”

Trump responded Tuesday evening by tweeting that Cooper and his representatives “refuse to guarantee that we can have use of the Spectrum Arena,” which he said would force them to “spend millions of dollars, have everybody arrive, and… then tell them they will not be able to gain entry.”

“Because of [Cooper], we are now forced to seek another State to host the 2020 Republican National Convention,” Trump declared.

Trump criticized Cooper for remaining in “Shelter-In-Place Mode,” adding that the convention would have “showcased beautiful North Carolina to the World, and brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, and jobs, for the State.”

Forbes has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment on what alternative sites they are considering.
