Trump Threatens To Cut Off Michigan’s Federal Funds Over Mail-In Voting

TOPLINE

President Trump tweeted early Wednesday morning that he might “hold up funding” to Michigan, claiming absentee ballots would be sent to the state’s 7.7 million voters—a decision Trump said was “illegal” and “without authorization.”

KEY FACTS

“Michigan sends absentee ballots to 7.7 million people ahead of Primaries and the General Election,” wrote Trump, adding, “This was done illegally and without authorization by a rogue Secretary of State. I will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!”

Trump did not specify which law Michigan was allegedly violating, and in a reply to his tweet, tagged chief of staff Mark Meadows, Office of Budget and Management Director Russ Vought, and the U.S. Treasury.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said Tuesday that ballot applications—not ballots themselves—would be sent to the state’s 7.7 million registered voters ahead of its primary and the November general election.

Benson said the decision was made to protect citizens amid the ongoing pandemic: “By mailing applications we have ensured that no Michigander has to choose between their health and their right to vote.”

Mail-in voting has already been a flashpoint issue this election year, with Trump claiming in an April 8 tweet the practice creates “potential for voter fraud,” and encouraged Republicans to work against those efforts.

According to the New York Times, U.S. election fraud is very rare, and the five states that vote entirely by mail (including GOP-heavy Utah) see very few instances of fraud.

Surprising fact

In the 2016 election, Trump won Michigan by a 0.23% margin. It was the narrowest victory in the state’s presidential election history.

Key background

Michigan has been a political flashpoint amid the coronavirus pandemic. Multiple protests against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order that shut down businesses have been held across the state (including several outside the state’s Capitol building). Neighboring state Wisconsin controversially held an in-person election April 7, which one study linked to a spike in coronavirus cases. According to Reuters, Republicans are more opposed to mail-in voting, claiming it causes fraud and favors Democrats. Meanwhile, Democrats argue that mail-in voting allows for wider participation in elections.

Tangent

Trump is scheduled to visit a Michigan Ford automobile factory Thursday in violation of an executive order prohibiting such visits. The company has asked Trump to wear a mask on the premises. “Where it’s appropriate, I would do it, certainly,” Trump told reporters Tuesday.
