Two Major WWE Stars Are ‘Getting Offers’ From Hollywood

WWE is no strangers to losing its biggest stars to Hollywood, and the company may be experiencing a case of deja vu.

Over the course of the past two decades, a handful of WWE’s most high-profile names have all but left pro wrestling behind for the world of TV and movies. Most notably, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson bolted WWE in the prime of his career nearly two decades ago and eventually became Hollywood’s highest-paid actor, according to FORBES. Other marquee wrestlers, like Batista and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, also traded in their wrestling boots for the silver screen.

Now, arguably WWE’s two top full-time stars could follow suit.

According to Paul Davis of WrestlingNews.co, Becky Lynch is generating a ton of interest in Hollywood. Davis wrote, “Becky Lynch…is getting television and movie offers. I was told of at least two directors that would be interested in casting her in big movie projects. Dave Meltzer noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that a major national women’s magazine is preparing for a major feature on Lynch and others in the entertainment world are interested in her because of how she connects with the crowd. I was told that her Twitter presence has helped her a lot.”

Lynch—who reportedly will appear in an upcoming Marvel movie—has made plenty of history in WWE over the past couple of years, becoming the first female star to grave the cover of the WWE 2K video game franchise and the first woman to main event a WrestleMania, among a slew of other accomplishments. She also recently cemented herself as one of WWE’s highest-paid stars, and her success as one of the most heavily featured stars in all of pro wrestling has paved the way for other female stars—ranging from Sasha Banks to Lana—to receive “significant pay raises” as WWE has recently highlighted more female stars than it had at any point in history.

It’s no surprise that Lynch—one of the best talkers and actors, whether male or female, in all of WWE—has become a hot commodity in the acting world. Although Lynch has her fair share of detractors among the WWE Universe, she is undoubtedly the most popular female star in WWE and is arguably the most popular star regardless of gender. She is a natural fit to eventually transition full-time to acting, but at just 33 years old and in the prime of her career, it seems unlikely that Lynch will give up her spot atop WWE’s women’s division—where she has been for roughly the past two years—for a less certain spot in Hollywood, though a gradual transition to acting makes sense.

In addition to “The Man,” Roman Reigns has also become a highly coveted star among TV and movie executives. Davis notes, “Another person who is getting offers is Roman Reigns. He will be in David Spade’s move titled The Wrong Missy on Netflix…and Reigns has interest from Hollywood producers for other projects. The feeling is that doors were opened for him when he did the Hobbs and Shaw movie. The feeling on Reigns is that he has the look of a star who will come off well on TV shows.”

Reigns has, of course, been WWE’s go-to guy for the past half a decade, essentially assuming the role as the “face of the company” from Cena, even though he hasn’t become quite the household name that Cena is. Although Reigns, like Lynch, has a lot of critics among WWE’s passionate fan base and isn’t the actor or talker that Cena is, he has been a fantastic representative for WWE over the past five years, holds himself incredibly well during interviews and media appearances, has the obvious familial connection to The Rock and—much like Lynch—seems to have more mainstream star power potential than just about anyone in WWE.

If you look at Batista, he certainly wasn’t known for his acting chops while in WWE, and yet, he’s gone on to have a wildly successful acting career, most notably making it big with his role as “Drax the Destroyer” in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Reigns could very well follow a similar path. During a 2019 interview with The Sportster (h/t SEScoops), Reigns said that he would “go on a fuller schedule as far as films” when his body can no longer handle the grind of WWE. When that will be, no one knows, but Reigns figures to have his pick of options if and when he chooses to go that route.

So, what’s that mean for WWE? Well, the company has already prepared for the potential departures of stars like Lynch and Reigns by never relying too heavily on one particular star, though the losses of “The Man” and “The Big Dog” would undoubtedly hurt more than most.
