Unclaimed Stimulus Checks: Here’s A State-By-State Breakdown

The IRS is still trying to distribute $1,200 stimulus checks to nearly nine million people. Sign up by October 15 if you want to receive your stimulus check this year.

While Congress and the White House continue discussions and negotiations for another coronavirus relief stimulus package, the IRS is still working to get the first $1,200 stimulus check into the hands of everyone eligible to receive it. With so many hoping for a second round of stimulus money, it’s astonishing to realize that nearly nine million people still have yet to claim the first one. Here’s a state-by-state breakdown of how many stimulus checks remain unclaimed by state.

Stimulus checks by state organized by the most to the least number of unclaimed checks.

Take note and share this message even if you have already received your stimulus check. IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig stated, “We are releasing this state-by-state information so that state and local leaders and organizations can better understand the size of this population in their communities and assist them in claiming these important payments. Time is running out to claim a payment before the deadline.”

Check your mailbox for a letter from the IRS about this stimulus check.

The IRS urges low-income, no-income and homeless people to register for stimulus checks by October 15. By Forbes’ calculation, approximately $10 billion has been left on the table because nearly nine million people have not claimed their stimulus checks. To remedy this situation, the IRS is conducting an outreach campaign to get the word out to some of the most disadvantaged individuals with information about how they can claim their $1,200 stimulus check.

As part of this outreach effort, the IRS sent out a special mailing this month to millions of people it believes may be eligible for the $1,200 stimulus check though they have yet to register for it. Be on the lookout for this special letter. Here’s a copy of what the IRS mailed out.

Take action by October 15 to get your stimulus check this year.

You don’t have to wait for a letter from the IRS. If you think you are eligible and you want to get a stimulus check by the end of this year, you need to sign up by October 15. If you haven’t received a stimulus check at all and you aren’t required to file federal taxes, you don’t need to wait for a letter from the IRS. You can sign up right now today by using this Non-Filers tool which the IRS has provided for you.

If you haven’t yet received a stimulus check, and you aren’t normally required to file federal income taxes, you may very well be eligible for this stimulus check. If one or more of these describes you, the IRS is urging you to use the Non-Filers tool to sign up for a stimulus check.

  • Use the Non-Filers tool to register for a stimulus check if you earned $12,200 or less as an individual or $24,400 or less as a married couple.
  • Use the Non-Filers tool to register for a stimulus check even if you didn’t earn any income at all.
  • Use the Non-Filers tool to register for a stimulus check even if you are homeless.
  • Use the Non-Filers tool to get a stimulus check even if you have been unemployed for a long time or have never worked at all.

Do not use the Non-Filers tool if you have already received the first stimulus check or if one of these applies.

  1. Do not use the Non-Filers tool if you have already filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019, but you are still waiting for your stimulus check. If this is your situation, you should use the Get My Payment tool instead to check on the status of your stimulus check.
  2. Do not use the Non-Filers tool if you are required to file taxes for 2018 or 2019 but haven’t yet done so. If this is your situation, you should go ahead and file your federal taxes, and the IRS will send you a stimulus check if you are eligible.

Contact the IRS with questions.

The IRS is asking you to sign up using this Non-Filers tool so they can check to see if you are eligible to receive a stimulus check. If for some reason, you aren’t able to use this tool or you find that you need to speak with an IRS representative, you can dial the stimulus check line at (800) 919-9835, or you can call the IRS customer service main line at (800) 829-1040.
