‘WandaVision’ Reveals Agatha Harkness And The Darkhold, Now What?

Well, it was Agatha all along.

Even though WandaVision fans guessed that Wanda’s neighbor Agnes would turn out to be the comic witch Agatha Harkness, it was still pretty neat when it happened. Wanda is lured to Agnes’ basement where the witch appears to have already captured her superpowered children, and we get a glimpse at an evil book that can only be the famed Darkhold.

Then, we’re treated to the earworm montage of “Agatha All Along” sung by Kathryn Hahn herself, no less, where we see that Agatha has been messing up Wanda’s perfect world this entire time, and has even gone so far as to be the one controlling her superpowered “recast” brother, Pietro, whom we glimpse in an (easy to miss) post-credits scene running into Monica Rambeau.

So, where do we go from here? Why is Agatha here?

In the comics, Agatha is old. Like, ancient, old, remembering events from around 10,000 BC. She lived through the Salem witch trials, she babysat for the Fantastic Four and then eventually was a mentor to Wanda Maximoff.

Where we are with current Agatha is unclear, but where many fans believe this is going is that Agatha will have some part in transforming Wanda from just plain “Wanda Maximoff” to the actual Scarlet Witch, which she is not known as in the MCU yet, despite her powers (remember SWORD saying she didn’t have a codename yet?). It’s likely the Darkhold, which has appeared in two other MCU shows now, Agents of SHIELD and Runaways, will contribute to that in some form, an evil book of dark matter made in the Hell Dimension.

It’s also very possible that even though the “Pietro is Mephisto” theory appears to be mostly dead, that Mephisto himself could appear in some way. Part of the conflict between Wanda and Agatha in the comic is that Agatha tells Wanda that her children are fragments of the soul of Mephisto. That could be true here in Westview, as while Wanda has done things like control citizens like puppets and bring her dead robot husband back to life, the biggest remains these superpowered kids, where they came from, how they have powers and why they grow so fast. We still may end up with the “fragments of Mephisto’s soul” explanation after all. That’s how Wanda lost them once, but eventually they became permanent additions to the Marvel universe, and I would expect we see Wiccan and Speed as “full grown” heroes by the end of all this, no matter what happens in the interim like their current disappearance.

For now, it sure seems like Agatha wants to antagonize Wanda, not train her, but we’ll see how their relationship evolves. There are only two episodes left in the season, and it’s unclear if WandaVision is supposed to have another season or not, or if this arc ends here. This may be a more simple ending than we envision, with Monica (now Photon/Spectrum with powers) and Wanda team up to defeat Agatha, and Wanda’s power ascends so she fully becomes Scarlet Witch. The show has already taken a lot of liberties with comic source material, so I wouldn’t expect it to play out exactly the same way.

In another week, we’ll know more. Stay tuned.
