‘We Can Be Heroes’ Just Set A New Record On Netflix’s Top 10 Charts

Last weekend, I wrote about how We Can Be Heroes had arguably become the most popular movie on Netflix
NFLX
ever.

But after today, it may no longer be an argument.

That’s because Robert Rodriguez’s superhero film just saw its 57th consecutive day on the Top 10 charts. That broke The Grinch’s previous record of 56 days, making We Can Be Heroes the most dominant film of Netflix’s Top 10 era.

Because Netflix keeps such a tight wrap on its viewership numbers, we can’t truly be sure about We Can Be Heroes’s place at the top of the movie pack. But in the last year, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, Netflix has seen its subscriber base grow to record numbers (there are now over 200 million Netflix users). And during that time, no movie has remained as consistently popular as We Can Be Heroes.

The Top 10 charts have allowed us to keep better track of movie performance over a longer period of time. Thanks to my Top 10 formula, I am able to assign points based on where a movie ranks each day. The beauty of this system is that it doesn’t matter how much Netflix’s subscriber base grows—all movies in the Top 10 ranking formula must adhere to the same point structure.

And in the 57 days We Can Be Heroes has been on the Top 10 charts, the film has amassed 377 points. That currently ranks second on the all-time list behind Despicable Me’s 428 points.

But here’s the thing: Despicable Me earned those points over 111 appearances on the Top 10, for an average of 3.86 points per showing. Meanwhile, We Can Be Heroes has averaged 6.61 points per appearance. The Rodriguez film’s momentum has not slowed down once since its premiere date. So if this streak keeps up, then We Can Be Heroes will surpass Despicable Me’s point total in about ten days’ time.

We Can Be Heroes’s 57-day streak is not only unmatched—most movies don’t even come close to achieving that kind of a run. Only two other movies have streaks that stretch beyond 50 days: The Grinch and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And after that, only two other movies—Despicable Me and 365 Days—have streaks over 40 days. Then only two more movies—The Christmas Chronicles 2 and The Angry Birds Movie 2—have streaks over 30 days.

During that 57-day run, We Can Be Heroes has finished in first place on the daily charts on ten different occasions. That’s the fifth-highest total ever, behind Spenser Confidential (18 days), Hubie Halloween (14 days), Project Power (14 days) and 365 Days (12 days).

Here are the current all-time rankings for my Top 10 points system. Notice how far ahead We Can Be Heroes has gotten in such a short period of time:

  1. Despicable Me – 428 points
  2. We Can Be Heroes – 377 points
  3. The Grinch – 349 points
  4. How The Grinch Stole Christmas – 299 points
  5. The Angry Birds Movie 2 – 284 points
  6. 365 Days – 282 points
  7. The Christmas Chronicles 2 – 241 points
  8. Spenser Confidential – 236 points
  9. Hubie Halloween – 224 points
  10. The Wrong Missy – 187 points
