‘Westworld’ Solves All Its Host Mysteries In One Fell Swoop

Westworld may only be in episode 4 of season 3, but it decided to drop the veil on one of its most pressing mysteries: which hosts Dolores smuggled out of the park during her big exit, which she is now putting in other bodies on the mainland.

We didn’t just get a reveal for one of the replacements, but we figured out what’s going on with all of them last night in a surprise twist I’ll admit I didn’t see coming, though it raises a lot of questions when you stop and actually think about it. Spoilers follow.

The reveal is that Dolores simply made copies of herself rather than taking out other hosts from the park. That means that Dolores, in Dolores’ body is the same Dolores that is in Charlotte Hale’s body, the security guard’s body and now the Japanese host from Shogun World’s body that is now somehow a Yakuza boss. I can’t remember if there’s a fifth “mind” floating around out there or not, but if so, that’s going to be another Dolores.

This…makes some amount of sense when you think about it. I was wondering what other hosts Dolores could trust with important roles as part of her world takeover plan (or whatever she’s doing), and I kept failing to think of any that made sense. Teddy came to mind (and Maeve guessed the Yakuza boss was Teddy, briefly), but he never really had the stomach for any of this. And who else does that leave? Only bit players like Clementine or that blonde girl whose name I can’t even remember. Given that we knew none were going to be Bernard or Maeve, there weren’t many good answers, so the Dolores cloning idea is somewhat logical.

However, it does seem like it exposes her quite a bit. If the entire plot of the season is the shadowy billionaire trying to capture Dolores and get in her mind, he now has four or five Doloreses to capture instead. I don’t know if the “key” he’s looking for is in all their minds or just the “main” Dolores that actually looks like her. I would hope she would be smarter than to clone something that valuable so it could be taken more easily, but who knows. Ideally, you’d hide it in one of the minds that was less conspicuous than the Dolores body that looks like Dolores.

I am trying to figure out if this season is good or becoming too convoluted for its own good. Nothing really seems to mean anything anymore. Dolores can’t die because she’s split across a bunch of different people. Maeve supposedly was killed last night, but if that was supposed to have any kind of emotional impact, it didn’t, and I’m sure her billionaire benefactor will heal her up and set her loose again shortly here.

We’ll see where all this is going, but I think the “who are the hosts” mystery was one of the more interesting ones of the season, and now that that’s solved, I’m not sure what the next big question to be answered really is, other than “what’s the endgame here?”
