WWE Money In The Bank 2020 Results: Asuka’s Push Is Here And 5 Things We Learned

WWE Money in the Bank 2020 was certainly one of the most bizarre pay-per-views in WWE history, and it was quite the newsworthy one, too.

At the first post-WrestleMania event of the year, WWE crowned two new MITB winners in a unique and first-ever “climb the corporate ladder” match, and the company’s top two champions were able to retain their titles but in much different fashion. Throw in some surprising happenings in other matches on the card, and it’s clear that WWE entered this PPV with the goal in mind of reigniting interest in its product at a time when viewership for both Raw and SmackDown is tanking to all-time lows with no real signs of that changing anytime soon.

Money in the Bank had only a few lowlights and its fair share of highlights, and it was undoubtedly a pay-per-view that won’t soon be forgotten, especially that one-of-a-kind main event. Is that for better or for worse?

Here are the five biggest takeaways from Money in the Bank 2020.

Is Bobby Lashley Set For A Massive Push?

WWE has really been focusing on building up Bobby Lashley again after several months of mediocrity on Raw, and at Money in the Bank, he stepped in and stepped up for MVP in order to take on—and then quickly defeat—R-Truth.

The creative team is reportedly considering utilizing MVP as the manager of a heel stable on Raw, and MVP’s interaction with Lashley sure set the stage for Lashley to emerge as the top star in MVP’s future villainous faction. That’s certainly not a bad idea after the very talented Lashley has wasted away in the midcard for much of his current two-year WWE run, which has been a talking point among wrestling circles for years because the creative team could have done so much more with Lashley right out of the gate.

Ideally, Lashley’s ongoing push will lead to him being elevated enough to emerge as an intriguing and legitimate foe for Brock Lesnar down the road, but at the very least, Money in the Bank was a good start for a renewed Lashley push.

Is Shayna Baszler Already Done As A Top Star?

Vince McMahon is reportedly unsure about pushing Shayna Baszler, which proved true at WrestleMania 36 when she failed to beat Becky Lynch for the Raw Women’s Championship.

That was already the second time, following the Royal Rumble, that Baszler failed to win a marquee match she was widely expected to win, and at Money in the Bank, she lost yet another major bout when she failed to win the women’s MITB ladder match. That makes Baszler 2-3 in main roster PPV matches, a record that is a far cry from her days in NXT, where she was one of the most dominant superstars—male or female—in all of WWE. Suffice it to say, there is reason to be concerned about Baszler’s future in WWE.

Given that McMahon has already reacted “negatively” to multiple high-profile matches involving “The Cagefighter,” her failure to win the Money in the Bank briefcase is just another sign that she’s going to be the latest former NXT stalwart to fizzle out on the main roster.

Drew McIntyre Will Be A Very Dominant World Champion

Drew McIntyre has been getting an absolute mega-push in 2019, with impressive wins in the Royal Rumble match and against Brock Lesnar (and Big Show) in quick fashion at WrestleMania 36 to go along with a slew of TV victories over a number of Raw stars.

At Money in the Bank, McIntyre added another big win to his growing resume with a hard fought but clean victory over Seth Rollins, who has been consistently pushed as one of the top two stars on Raw for roughly half a decade. You can clearly see that WWE is firmly committed to pushing McIntyre as far as he can go, and this is obviously an interesting situation because—though social media reaction to McIntyre is overwhelmingly positive—we cannot gauge live crowd reaction to him right now. Meanwhile, Vince McMahon putting the blame for Raw’s tanking ratings on new stars is a worrisome sign about his future as champion.

McIntyre, however, is a fantastic representative for WWE as its world champion, but WWE’s notoriously harsh fan base has often rejected dominant runs like the one McIntyre is currently on. There is little reason to believe that fans will turn on McIntyre so soon, but this is something to keep an eye on, especially after the way he has dismantled Zelina Vega’s rising heel stable and the way that hasn’t sat so well with some fans.

Bray Wyatt Vs. Braun Strowman Is A Lose-Lose Situation

You could tell by the finish of Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt at Money in the Bank, when Strowman distracted Wyatt with a black sheep’s mask before winning the bout, that WWE is stuck between a rock and a hard place with this rivalry.

On one hand, you’ve got the uber-popular “heel” in Wyatt, who never should have lost the Universal title in the first place. On the other hand, you’ve got Strowman, who is also a big fan favorite and is finally getting the world title reign he should have gotten at least two years ago. SmackDown’s roster is pretty limited in terms of top stars due to the absence of names like Roman Reigns, and that’s been quite evident with the way WWE has rushed into this Wyatt/Strowman rivalry during a period in which Strowman shouldn’t drop the title but Wyatt shouldn’t be losing any more major matches either.

Based on the result of their Money in the Bank match, this feud is going to continue past the pay-per-view, but as SmackDown’s viewership continues to plunge, you have to wonder if WWE is going to call some sort of audible to book itself out of this whole situation and to make its top feud more interesting than it has been.

The Push Is On For Asuka And Otis

What Vince McMahon wants, Vince McMahon gets.

The WWE Chairman and CEO is reportedly a huge supporter of both Otis and Asuka, and that was all but confirmed at Money in the Bank when both of those stars won their respective MITB ladder matches by outlasting star-studded fields to do so. Of course, their wins didn’t come in traditional ladder matches, but that will only make them stand out all the more.

Otis has been getting over in a major way—even without fans in attendance—due to his genuine likability while Asuka continues to win over fans with her unparalleled combination of charm and in-ring skill, making them both great choices to carry those coveted MITB briefcases and potentially create some intriguing storylines for however long they hold them.

Although WWE gets a lot of flack for its questionable booking moves, the wins by Asuka and Otis certainly don’t fit the bill as poor creative calls, and now, both stars are in line for sizable pushes and potential future world title reigns.

Not bad. Not bad at all.
