WWE Money In The Bank 2020 Results: Braun Strowman Beats Bray Wyatt, Whose Aura Has Been Destroyed

WWE did at Money in the Bank 2020 what if often does: Book itself into a corner.

At the first post-WrestleMania pay-per-view of the year, new Universal Champion Braun Strowman defended his title against Bray Wyatt inside the audience-less Performance Center, and he did so successfully when he distracted Wyatt with his black sheep’s mask and then hit him with just one powerslam. Any which way you slice it, however, that outcome was proof positive that WWE stuck itself between a rock and a hard place when that really wasn’t necessary—and Wyatt’s aura continues to be destroyed.

Although SmackDown took a noticeable star power hit when Goldberg left WWE following WrestleMania 36 and Roman Reigns removed himself from TV indefinitely due to the potential effects of COVID-19, WWE didn’t need to immediately book a feud between two stars who shouldn’t be losing matches right now. Strowman’s credibility as a main eventer and potential world champion has taken plenty of beatings over the years due to his repeated failures to win “the big one,” and just before beating Goldberg at WrestleMania 36, he had lost the Intercontinental Championship the month prior. Wyatt’s once impenetrable aura, meanwhile, took a near knockout blow at Super ShowDown back in February, when “The Fiend” loss to Goldberg in one of the most short-sighted booking moves in recent memory.

So, what does WWE do? Well, naturally it puts Strowman in a feud with Wyatt when that is a lose-lose scenario. And Wyatt lost at Money in the Bank. Both literally and figuratively.

Wyatt’s popularity has soared over the past year when he established himself as WWE’s merchandise king (selling his merch like hotcakes), and yet, his sinister “The Fiend” alter-ego lost long before he should have to a superstar who may never wrestle again. Likewise, Strowman has spent much of the past three years being plagued by disappointing booking decision after disappointing booking decision, and truth be told, his victory over Goldberg likely only happened because Goldberg wasn’t going to stick around after WrestleMania and because Reigns is unavailable indefinitely. But as soon as Strowman won that title, he became “the guy” on SmackDown and the superstar who needed to carry the blue brand on his gargantuan shoulders.

Of course, Strowman hasn’t really been able to do that, not that anyone would right now. SmackDown’s viewership has descended to all-time lows during his reign, in large part because WWE’s fan-less shows are simply difficult to watch but also because the Strowman/Wyatt feud hasn’t been that exciting, especially given the circumstances. On one hand, you’ve got Strowman, a well-liked superstar but one who is limited in the ring and as a talker. On the other hand, you’ve got Wyatt, who is a heel in name only and should be the modern day version of The Undertaker but—as we’ve grown to expect—has been hampered by poor booking.

WWE officials likely felt that there was a lack of other heel options for Strowman to face on SmackDown, and outside of names like Sheamus, that is largely true. That, however, is a problem created by WWE’s own doing, and SmackDown’s clear lack of bankable top stars is putting the blue brand, as well as names like Strowman and Wyatt, in an unwinnable situation. If Strowman gets through this feud with the title still in hand, where does that leave Wyatt? If Strowman quickly loses the belt, where does that leave Strowman?

There is no encouraging answer to either of those questions, which makes you wonder why the decision was made to book this rivalry with no end goal in mind.

And thus far, the only going it’s accomplished is delivering another jaw-rocking punch to Wyatt, whose mystique is slowly but surely disappearing.
