WWE Still Hasn’t Announced Lineups For 2-Night WrestleMania 36 Just Hours Before PPV

With hours remaining until Night 1 of WrestleMania 36, WWE still has yet to announce specific lineups for the coronavirus-impacted spectacular. WWE’s biggest show will begrudgingly take place across multiple nights for the first time in history.

WWE has already announced all scheduled matches for the taped show, however in a head-scratching decision, the promotion refrained from specifically announcing what matches would take place on which night despite pricing each show at upwards of $34.95 per night. During a promo on Raw this past Monday, Kevin Owens mentioned his match against Seth Rollins would be on Saturday, however very little else has been confirmed about the scheduling of this unprecedented card.

Those looking to be discretionary with their finances—which is the vast majority of individuals right now with the world at a standstill—may only have enough disposable income for one night assuming they go the pay-per-view route. Knowing which matches will be airing on each night will make that decision much easier for pay-per-view consumers.

With a stadium show out of the window, WWE has opened up its beleaguered spectacular to several previously shunned pay-per-view providers such as DirecTV
DTV
($34.95 per night),
Verizon
VEON
($29.99 per night), Comcast
CMCSA
($34.95 per night) and the Dish Network
DISH
(currently advertised at $59.99 per night in what may be an error). WWE has also partnered with Fox Sports pay-per-view to air the two-night spectacular at a bundled price of $59.99.

Of course, despite its pay-per-view reunion of sorts, WWE is also offering its show of shows on its own platform of the WWE Network, which is free for new subscribers. That means, those looking to circumvent paying over $60 for two nights of WrestleMania during these trying times—where unemployment rose to 10 million in March—can simply sign up for a free trial.

While WWE’s foray back into pay-per-view may have been partly influenced by an apparent desire to recoup lost revenue for the empty-arena show, WWE has been trending toward a pay-per-view model dating back to February’s 4Q 2019 earnings call.

Then, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon revealed WWE was considering selling off its pay-per-view rights to a major streaming partner to better monetize the stagnant WWE Network.

“We have a lot of options [for WWE Network monetization]. We could continue on as we are now, with an enhancement of a tier…we also have an option right now—there’s no more better time to exercise the selling of our rights to all the majors who, quite frankly, all the majors are really clamoring for our content. So that could be a significant increase, obviously, in terms of revenue.”

ESPN+ immediately emerged as a likely streaming partner, but despite ESPN leaning on WWE content with live sports suspended, the two sides reportedly failed to reach a deal.

WrestleMania airs Saturday, April 4, 2020 and Sunday, April 5 at 7 pm EST/4 pm PST.
