Yankees Owner Steinbrenner Expects Home Fans This Season

In an interview with the partially team-owned YES Network, New York Yankees Chairman Hal Steinbrenner said he expects fans in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium for games sometime in 2020.

Steinbrenner reportedly told YES’ Meredith Marakovits that he’s had “many conversations” with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo about having fans during the shortened 60-game Major League Baseball season, which is expected to begin on July 23 with the Yankees traveling to Washington to take on the defending champion Nationals. The release of the schedule is not expected to take place until next week, per reports.

New York City was for a very long stretch of time the world epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, with 220,567 positive tests and 22,593 deaths as of Thursday morning, per New York Times
NYT estimates. But strict stay-at-home measures and overall diligence has seen the case count steadily drop of late, with the seven-day positive case average down to 293 as of Wednesday, a decrease from the 392 averaged 14 days ago, according to the Times.

Apparently, that’s been of interest to Steinbrenner and the Yankees, who began their summer camp in the Bronx on Wednesday preparing for the truncated campaign. Of course, these conversations should be seen as very preliminary and could be quickly derailed if anything goes wrong in the city. NYC is delaying aspects planned Phase 3 reopening plan due to a surge in cases in other populous U.S. states.

If all goes to plan, the Yankees will play 10 games each against American League East rivals the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays and 20 games against National League East foes the New York Mets, Nationals, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins.

It is yet to be seen how MLB will handle its 30 teams in various home cities at different stages of reopening. If a city allows fans, or more of a percentage of fans than another, would that be viewed as an unfair competitive advantage? Like almost everything during the first half of 2020, it seems like the Yankees and MLB will go into the calendar year’s second half with an abundance of uncertainty.
