Adam Sandler’s Josh Safdie-Directed Netflix Special Out This Month

Adam Sandler and his Uncut Gems director, Josh Safdie, are set to reunite… for a new standup comedy special debuting later this month.

The special, Adam Sandler: Love You, premieres on Netflix on August 27 and marks the first time Safdie has directed a stand-up special. 

As for what features in the special, Sandler outlines it in his opening remarks in the trailer: “So anyways, I talk a lot, and then I sing, and we do a bunch of shit.” The preview also teases flourishes of Safdie’s frenetic directorial style, especially in quick scenes of Sandler backstage.

Adam Sandler: Love You follows the 2018 Netflix special 100% Fresh, which — despite the actor’s lengthy and fruitful production deal with the streaming service — was only Sandler’s first stand-up comedy special since 1996.

Both Sandler and Safdie serve as producers on Love You, as does longtime Safdie brothers collaborator Ronald Bronstein.

Following the release and success of Uncut Gems, Sandler worked with Safdie and his brother, Benny, on a short film, Goldman v Silverman, about a turf war between two street performers. 

The Safdies were also set to direct Sandler in a new movie centered around the world of sports cards and memorabilia (also reportedly starring Megan Thee Stallion and Ben Affleck), but the current status of the project is unclear: Benny ultimately left, and while Josh was slated to take over as director, Benny told Variety last year that the movie is “on pause.” 

Sandler himself has since moved on to other projects, including director Noah Baumbach’s next film and a sequel to Happy Gilmour.
