College Basketball Players Making Decisions on Future

If you are someone that makes expert picks when it comes to college basketball, then June 1 was a big news day to follow. This was the final day that players could officially withdraw from the NBA Draft and keep their college eligibility.

Many players had already confirmed their decisions before the deadline on June 1, but a couple of big names were still out there. One of the biggest names that were still on the list was All-American Drew Timme, and he made an announcement that will have huge college basketball implications.

Timme Time

Timme announced he is removing his name from the NBA Draft and returning to Gonzaga University for another season. That news immediately makes the Bulldogs one of the title favorites next season, which has become common for this program.

Head coach Mark Few was running the risk of losing out on all of his starters from a season ago, but that didn’t turn out to be the case. Timme has been named a second-team All-American for back-to-back seasons and will likely land one of the teams again this year.

Timme has helped lead the Bulldogs to a 90-7 record during his time in Spokane, but a national title continues to elude the program. The forward has averaged at least 18 points and six rebounds in each of the last two seasons.

The Gonzaga team will be without Chet Holmgren and Andrew Nembhard next season, but two other players have also returned. Rasir Bolton and Julian Strawther also announced that they are coming back to school for another year, and the Bulldogs have also reloaded with recruits.

It’s unclear where Timme would have gone in the 2022 NBA Draft, but most projections had him getting selected at some point.

Michigan Losing Some Talent

University of Michigan head coach Juwan Howard has been building a dominant college basketball program, and it’s been built on highly-touted prospects. That strategy has allowed this program to take off once again, forcing Howard to reload nearly every year.

June 1 was a pretty big day for the future of Michigan basketball, and Howard and his program got some disappointing news. The team will be without both Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate next season as both are staying in the draft.

Houstan and Diabate are leaving after just one year at Michigan, and both players are projected to go somewhere in the first round. Diabate came on strong in the middle of the season for Michigan, and Houstan was in the starting lineup from the beginning of the season.

The Wolverines were expected to be one of the top teams in the Big Ten Conference in 2022-23, but Howard and his coaching staff will have to reload on talent in a hurry.

Blue Devils to Look Different

The Duke Blue Devils will no longer have Coach K on the sidelines this season, and it will be Jon Scheyer that has taken over. That’s not the only change to this program, though, as some of the top talents from a season ago have also moved on.

Trevor Keels is the latest Duke player to officially leave the program as he will be keeping his name in the 2022 NBA Draft. Keels is projected to go late in the First Round, and one service has him being taken with the 26th overall pick.

Duke is no stranger to losing players after just one season, but Keels was not projected to be a one-and-done player when he first arrived on campus. If Keels is chosen in the NBA Draft, he is expected to be the youngest player taken.

The Blue Devils will also be without Paolo Banchero next season, but that loss was expected before he even played his first season at Duke. Banchero could be the first player chosen in the NBA Draft or at least land somewhere in the top five.
