Old Games vs Modern Games – Which Ones are Better?

Computer games have gone through numerous changes. If we were to compare games from past and recent periods, they are far from each other. Everything from graphics to gameplay and plot has changed and as the video game industry grows to reach immense heights, these differences become even more obvious.

A lot of people are nostalgic about past video games. They were more stylish and made a real revolution. Mario and Tetris are examples. We can say the same about online casino games. Let’s have a look at the comparison and contrast between these two periods.

Plotting

The methods of plotting have changed drastically. Modern games have almost grown to cinematography, which is very pleasing. Considering that earlier the story either did not exist a priori, or it was presented mainly in short textual dialogues – it is a big leap. In general, everything is ambiguous here – on the one hand, just space opportunities, on the other hand, few people use them at least half. Screenwriters are still practically not in demand in game development, which is sad.

Gameplay

However, on the gameplay side, things have become much better now. That is, if you think about it, it is quite obvious that earlier games were many times more primitive, both in concept and in implementation. Shooters of those times provided a standard set of weapons, stupid and identical enemies, closed locations and zero entertainment. Yes, shooting was still fun – but this was the first time. Of course, the good old Doom is still fun to play, but if such a concept (albeit with advanced features and modern graphics) were stamped at least twice now, it would be boring, uninteresting and unprofitable in general. But its mechanics are five times more complex and interesting than anything that has ever been on the first-person shooter market. And this is already an evolution.

Of course the same goes for other forms of entertainment, which is primarily online gambling. Back in the 90s and early 2000s people were visiting online casinos frequently, trying out arcade machines that brought more entertainment and joy. In the modern world, the concept of online gambling changed massively as well. If we take a look at modern table games, slots and other forms of entertainment they are different in gameplay and graphics. Live shows started to dominate the industry. One of such notable examples is a crazy time – the game with live dealers that would be unimaginable in the past. All these are directly connected to the development of the gaming industry. This process is irreversible and is shown in any field of gaming. Crazy time is particularly interesting. While the game is promoted, it is not as popular as its counterparts.

Experiments Remain the Same

The gameplay that was in the 2000s remains the same. Genre experiments, at least some, are not enough on the AAA market. When Ubisoft launched the Assassin’s Creed line – it would seem that here they are – genre experiments. As a result, this is already the 7th game, and the concept has not changed. This is the whole problem. The idea becomes boring and then completely ceases to be something new.

This approach to development does not make them worse – the same GTA, without changing its plot in any way for how many years, leaves due to the phenomenal elaboration of everything and everyone. In other words, the more identical projects, the more requirements for the next project in this category. And you can close your eyes to the shortcomings of new, original projects with unusual mechanics – after all, you will not see this anywhere else.

Difficulty

We should also note that the old games obviously went too far with difficulty. And for modern games, everything turned out just the opposite – sometimes games simply do not provide any challenge.

Business

Last but not least, games have become a business. Previously, any enthusiast who loves to play games, and who accidentally found a programming book in his father’s library, could make a game in six months. Then it grew into a somewhat larger scale – entire studios, their own artists, screenwriters and even programmers writing a new engine that would allow producing “super realistic pictures.” But they were all the same enthusiasts who care for the fate of the project.

Now, as stated earlier, this is a business. Huge studios work on games, in which hundreds and even thousands of people. It turned into a manufactory, and the game loses the idea that was originally laid down by the author.

The Comparison is Useless

To summarize, you can still talk a lot on this topic, but from all of the above, we need to point out that the games have not become worse. There were a few good games before, and now there are a few of them. True, before there were, in principle, not many games, but now there are a lot of all kinds of “popcorn” games. They are well advertised, well bought, and often scolded. And precisely because of the dominance of such games, truly excellent games can be missed, not noticed. Is it evolution or degradation? Everyone decides for himself.
