Watch Jon Stewart Break Down Harris-Trump Debate on ‘The Daily Show’

The Daily Show went live last night following the debate between presidential hopefuls Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, with host Jon Stewart offering commentary on how it all went down.

“So far it seems like this presidential race is going to be a tight one,” Stewart told the late-night show audience, recounting some of the recent endorsements that have been given to both candidates. He mentioned Dick Cheney’s comments about planning to vote for Harris, which prompted Stewart to tell the former vice president to “fuck off.”

Stewart broke down both candidates’ strategies going into the debate before getting into the event itself. After playing a clip of the first question in the debate, about America’s economy, Stewart delightedly noted how neither actually answered the query.

“I just want to say after surviving the PTSD of the last presidential debate how unbelievably refreshing it is to go back to the same old ‘Nobody’s gonna answer any fucking questions!’” Stewart affirmed. “We’re back! America is back! You ask them a question and they just turn the tide and answer whatever they want to answer.”

Stewart went through additional questions and the candidates’ answers, including how they handled the issue of abortion and Trump’s rallies. After playing a clip of Harris commenting on the way Trump supporters leave his events early, Stewart proclaimed, “She has attacked what is Donald Trump’s most cherished family member: his rally crowds.”

Later, Stewart played the clip of Trump claiming people in Springfield are eating family pets. “What the fuck just happened?” Stewart said, turning to address the audience from a second camera. “A quick reminder to all the pet owners out there, always remember to leash your dogs,” the host quipped. “It’s an important way to keep your dogs from fighting other dogs or being hit by a car or being eaten by your immigrant neighbors.”

Ultimately, Stewart concluded he didn’t know if the debate would change anyone’s mind about who to vote for. “People are awfully set in the manner that they view these proceedings,” he said. “What I think is a home run answer for one candidate someone else views as a dodge or a lie or any of those other things. It doesn’t matter what they say anymore.”

He added, “But one thing will always be true and it is the quality of the former president I respect the least: whenever he is cornered and forced to face even the smallest of consequences for his own mendacity and scheming he reverts to the greatest refuge of scoundrels. As Shaggy would say, ‘It wasn’t me!’… In any other country that lack of accountability would be disqualifying.”
