Radiation Protection Tips – Protecting Yourself from Radiation

In life, background radiation from natural minerals surrounds us all the time. Luckily, in very few situations is the average human exposed to uncontrolled, harmful radiation.

However, preparing and knowing what to do in such a case is a wise move. One way to be ready is by understanding the radiation protection principles which are time, distance, and shielding.

Exposure to radiation cannot be undone. Once the body absorbs the maximum dose of Gamma, Beta, or Alpha exposure the consequences will follow.

By educating yourself you can block radiation and protect yourself from harmful effects of dangerous radiation. You can use radiation protection principles to protect both you and your family.

Tips for protecting yourself

At the basic level, the 3 simple principles help limit exposure to harmful radiation.

Time

Limiting the exposure time to harmful radiation decreases the absorption of harmful rays. So, it is important to decrease the time you are in close proximity or contact with radioactive materials.

The time you spend in contact with radioactive materials is known as stay time. Scientists have an equation for determining the maximum stay time.

Stay time = exposure limit/dose rate.

The bottom line is that limiting or minimizing the exposure time reduces the dose you get from the radiation source.

Distance

Radiation dosage decreases drastically as you move away from the source. You are exposed to more radiation the closer you are to the radioactive source.

In public, after radioactive disasters, evacuations of residents start immediately. Whenever you double the distance from the radioactive source, you decrease the exposure by ¼.

However, when you halve the distance between you and the source, the exposure increases by a factor of 4. Knowing the type of radiation energy you are exposed to is important.

For instance, Gamma rays travel at the speed of light. On the other hand. Beta particles travel approximately 10 feet and Alpha particles are limited to several inches.

However, ingesting or inhaling Alpha particles is possible and can destroy living tissue from such exposure.

Shielding

Radiation shields are designed to completely stop or slow the likelihood of radiation energy penetrating them. Different substances are used to block each type of radioactive energy.

As such, you can block Alpha particles by giving yourself several inches of air space, water, or a shield. In the case of Gamma rays, you will need serious radiation shieldings such as protective clothing and lead wool blankets.

Radiation emergencies

When a large-scale radiological release occurs, the following advice is proven to offer maximum protection. Take measures to protect your loved ones, your pets, and yourself. If possible get inside, stay inside and stay tuned.

Get inside

For a period, you may have to get inside a building in case of a radiation emergency. The action is known as “sheltering in place”. Stay away from the windows and doors.

Stay inside

By staying inside, you decrease your radiation exposure. Shower or clean your exposed body parts using a damp cloth. Also, take bottled water and consume food in sealed containers.

Stay tuned

Wait for emergency officials to respond to the disaster and provide you with specific actions. For updates get online, listen to the radio, and watch television.

Emergency officials will direct you on where you can be screened for contamination.
