What Are the Most Frequent Underlying Causes of Auto Accidents?

Some car accidents can’t be avoided, but many car accidents can be. There are some common causes of many auto accidents

1. Distracted Driving

This is the number one cause of accidents. A distracted driver doesn’t have his or her complete attention on the road and could be paying closer attention to passengers, a mobile device, or food. When behind the wheel, it’s important to always be paying attention, no matter what distractions there are, in order to get where you need to be safe.

2. Speeding

It’s not unusual for people to drive even 20 miles over the speed limit. However, the faster you are going then the slower the reaction time. If you are trying to prevent an accident when you are driving 20 miles over the limit, you likely won’t be able to do so.

3. Drunk Driving

Anyone who drinks and then gets behind the wheel is not only a danger to themselves but also to others. When you consume alcohol, your cognitive functions and senses are dulled. If you get behind the wheel, then your decision-making capabilities are going to be compromised and reaction times are also going to be slowed. If you do decide to drink while you are out, then make sure that you find someone sober in order to get home safely.

4. Reckless Driving

There are a number of examples of reckless driving, including tailgating, cutting off other drivers, and weaving in and out of traffic. Each of these things can cause an accident. If you are out on the road and see someone doing these activities, make sure you back off and give them some space since there is nothing you are going to be able to do to make the driver safer. You will want to protect yourself and stay out of the way if possible.

5. Bad Weather

Rain is the most common weather event that cause accidents. Water creates a slick road and can cause a car to slide and slip without much warning. If you are in a rainstorm, be sure to drive extra carefully. Even if you think your tires are sticking to the road just as they should, there is a chance that they aren’t so being extra careful never hurt.

6. Going Through Intersections

Running through stop signs or red lights is another cause. Red means stop and it’s not just a suggestion to do what you please. If the light is turning yellow, it means to slow down and not speed up in order to catch the light. It can also be tempting to run through stop signs in your neighborhood to make it home faster. There could be many people out so it’s necessary to come to a full stop and the extra 10 seconds likely won’t make a difference in your day.

7. Teenaged Drivers

Teenagers can be dangerous drivers because of their inexperience. A teenager that is presented with a new driving situation doesn’t know how to react. If you see someone young behind the wheel, give them some room and stay behind.

8. Driving at Night

Nighttime driving can increase the risk of an accident by nearly double since it’s harder to see what’s coming at you from the side and what is up ahead. When the sun starts to set, you need to have more heightened awareness in order to prevent an accident.

9. Design Defects

There are many different trucks and cars that have design defects that can make you more vulnerable to accidents. In the past, there was a vehicle named the Geo Tracker. The small SUV made a lot of headlines since it had a tendency to tip over around some sharp turns. This vehicle isn’t the only one that can make driving more dangerous.

10. Making Unsafe Lane Changes

Chances are you have experienced someone cutting you off. When passing another vehicle, it’s important you have plenty of room in order to get in front of them. If you don’t have enough room to get in front safely then you shouldn’t pass. Pay close attention to what is on both sides of your vehicle so that you can make a safe lane change.

11. Wrong Way Driving and Improper Turns

If you aren’t familiar with an area, it can be easy to turn down a one-way street the wrong way. Pay attention to signs that indicate one-way roads. Know which direction you need to go in before you get off highway ramps. Wrong-way drivers can be extra dangerous since people aren’t really on the lookout for them. When you are turning at an intersection, make sure you are in the right lane.  If you have been involved in a car accident from these causes or any other cause, you may need the help of a car accident lawyer at Montoya Hinckley Law Firm.
