No returns: 1.6L entities lose GST registrations – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Tax authorities have cancelled the GST registration of over 1.6 lakh entities for not filing returns for over six months and separately arrested over 132 persons for alleged irregularities related to filing of fake invoices to claim bogus refunds.
During the last one month, a nationwide operation has resulted in the arrests, including four chartered accountants and a woman for availing or passing on ineligible tax credits on inputs. Since mid-November, 1,430 cases have been filed against 4,586 entities that were allegedly identified as fake, a finance ministry source said. Over 1.2 crore entities are registered for GST.
Sources said that all these GSTIN entities which had not filed their GSTR-3B or the final returns for over six months were first issued the cancellation notices before their registrations were cancelled, in line with the standard operating procedure.
Another 28,635 taxpayers who have not filed their GSTR-3B returns for more than six months have been identified and all GST commissionerates have been asked to initiate cancellation.
