The 10 Most Popular Shows On Netflix (So Far) In August

Thanks to Netflix’s newly established Top 10 feature, we’re able to gauge which shows are dominating the world’s most popular streaming service from day to day, week to week, and month to month—which includes August. And as the end of the month nears, we’ve been able to numerically track which shows are dominating the platform.

While a handful of shows have dominated the Top 10 this month on Netflix, August has actually been one of the more hotly contested months for shows. Each day, it seems like a brand new program enters the Top 10—which has made for an exciting time for the monthly rankings.

So here they are: the ten most popular shows this month on Netflix.

Note: this article explains the point-tallying system we use for Netflix’s Top 10 feature.

10. Sugar Rush – 37 points

The “Extra Sweetseason of Sugar Rush got off to a mildly impressive start at the beginning of this month, as it premiered in the #5 position and eventually reached third place on the daily Top 10. But by July 9, Sugar Rush had exited the daily list altogether, making a grand total of nine appearances.

9. (Un)Well – 48 points

Netflix’s new docu-series that attempts to debunk controversial health fads has gotten off to a great start since its July 12 debut. (Un)Well enjoyed a five-day run in fourth place, which netted the show 35 points in a short period of time. Since, the program has fallen further down the list, plummeting all the way down to the #10 spot today. But it seems like (Un)Well could stay alive long enough to make the final monthly rankings.

8. Selling Sunset – 49 points

Selling Sunset faired much better in August than it did a few months ago. In May, the program only made six appearances on the Top 10 and culled together ten points. In August, however, the reality show made 12 showings on the Top 10 and put together 49 points. Selling Sunset recently exited the daily list, so it remains to be seen if 49 points will be enough to make the monthly rankings by the end of August.

7. Teenage Bounty Hunters – 53 points

Teenage Bounty Hunters has only been on Netflix for seven days. But in that short period of time, the show has risen all the way to seventh place—and will likely move even higher. Teenage Bounty Hunters has enjoyed a six-day streak in third place on the daily Top 10 (thanks to The Umbrella Academy and The Legend of Korra’s dominance), and hasn’t shown any signs of letting up so far.

6. The Last Dance – 67 points

The Last Dance accomplished a rare feat by spending 29 consecutive days on the Top 10—something only a handful of shows have done on Netflix. That run included 13 days in July when the Chicago Bulls docu-series scored 110 points and finished in fifth place for the month. And while The Last Dance kicked off August in third place, the show slowly fell down the rankings and exited the Top 10 altogether on July 16. In the yearly rankings, the show ranks in 18th place.

5. The Legend of Korra – 69 points

The Legend of Korra’s stellar run so far in August has been anything but surprising. The animated series is a spin-off of Avatar: The Last Airbender—a show that spent 61 consecutive days on the Top 10 (that’s a record, by the way). Now The Legend of Korra is chasing that milestone after accruing 69 points in just seven days. Today, The Legend of Korra experienced its sixth consecutive day atop the daily Top 10.

4. The Seven Deadly Sins – 84 points

Thanks to The Umbrella Academy and World’s Most Wanted’s multi-day showing at #1 and #2, The Seven Deadly Sins spent eight straight days in third place on the daily Top 10. Still, that was enough to net the anime show 64 of its 84 points, which has helped The Seven Deadly Sins nestle nicely into fourth place for the entire month.

3. World’s Most Wanted – 97 points

On July 18, World’s Most Wanted officially exited the daily Top 10 altogether. But up until that point, the docu-series saw an impressive seven-day streak in second place (behind The Umbrella Academy) and racked up 13 total Top 10 appearances for the month.

2. Shameless – 140 points

Shameless has seen a ridiculous run since its July 26 debut on Netflix. The show opened to a five-day run in first place—which it followed up with seven more days in second place. The show has yet to fall below the #6 position in the month of August, despite heavy competition from new shows. In the yearly rankings, Shameless slots in 14th place (and should move to 13th place by tomorrow).

1. The Umbrella Academy – 194 points

What more needs to be said about The Umbrella Academy’s August run? The cult Netflix Original became the first scripted show on the streaming platform to spend 15 consecutive days in first place—which was followed up by six additional days in the #2 slot. In just 22 days, the second season of The Umbrella Academy has amassed 194 points and already ranks as the 12th-most-popular program of 2020. And within a few days, The Umbrella Academy should breach the yearly Top 10.
