10 Great Movies To Watch Before They Disappear From Netflix At The End Of September

Many people are excited for the slate of new movies heading Netflix’s way this October, which includes some great flicks like Fargo, Her, Gran Torino, Stranger Than Fiction—honestly, the list goes on and on.

However, several other movies will be leaving Netflix come October 1—which means you only have a few more days to watch one of the 28 movies leaving the world’s most popular streaming platform.

Luckily, we’ve counted down ten great movies to check out before they leave—and now we’ve got ten more. Here are ten additional great movies from all different kinds of genres that I would recommend watching before they disappear from Netflix at the end of September.

Note: at the end of the article, I’ve listed out every movie leaving Netflix at the end of the month.

40 Days and 40 Nights

Ah, I miss the days when heartthrob Josh Hartnett was a rising star in Hollywood. A romantic vehicle like 40 Days and 40 Nights was perfect for Hartnett, who owned the boyish charisma of modern celebrities like Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum. Back in 2002, this movie focused on Hartnett’s character Matt, who decides to give up sex for lent—that’s 40 days and 40 nights of celibacy.

Dear John

Speaking of Channing Tatum! The bankable star collaborated with Amanda Seyfried back in 2010 for the Nicolas Sparks adaptation Dear John. The story centers on Tatum’s character John, who falls for Seyfried’s character Savannah. However, when John is deployed to war, their whirling and winding relationship becomes difficult to manage.

Despicable Me

If you can believe it, Despicable Me has been the most consistently popular movie on Netflix this year—by a long shot, actually. But the animated favorite’s run will finally come to an end in just a few days’ time. The movie tells the story of Felonious Guru—an evil mastermind who plans to steal the moon. However, his plans shift when three orphan girls wish for Guru to become their new father.

Insidious

The Insidious film series was created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell. And of the four movies in the franchise, the original Insidious still holds up as the most transcendent horror experience of the bunch. The movie focuses on two parents—played by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne—who are forced to take drastic measures when their son becomes possessed by a menacing entity.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

It’s easy to recommend the original Jurassic Park (which is also leaving Netflix at the end of the month, by the way). But I’ll take this chance to really push for people to check out the second film in the Jurassic Park series: The Lost World. Beautifully shot by director Steven Spielberg and his cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, The Lost World moves past the events of the first film and focuses on a new Jurassic Park filled with dinosaurs. The movie stars Jeff Goldblum, Julianna Moore and Richard Attenborough.

Menace II Society

The Hughes brothers—which consists of Albert and Allen Hughes—have directed and produced several great movies over the years. But their true shining moment came in 1993 with the cult hit Menace II Society, which is chock full of great performances from people like Larenz Tate, Tyrin Turner, Jada Pinkett Smith, Samuel L. Jackson—I could keep going. The movie centers on 18-year-old Caine, who is looking to escape the gang lifestyle of the Los Angeles projects.

Mortal Kombat

Paul W.S. Anderson would go on to direct several of the films in the the beloved Resident Evil franchise. But way back in the 1990s, he hit everybody’s radars with his first video game adaptation: Mortal Kombat. While the movie was lambasted by critics at the time, Mortal Kombat has gained a loyal following from action movie fans. The film details the events of a legendary tournament where several different kinds of fighters meet up to battle.

Mud

One year before Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for his role as the lead actor in Dallas Buyers Club, he was universally praised for his performance in the dramatic indie film Mud. In this 2012 project, McConaughey plays a man named Mud—a fugitive who enlists two young boys to help him out. Mud has just killed a man in Texas and wishes to reunite with his former lover, Juniper (played by Reese Witherspoon).

Schindler’s List

While I was hesitant to include two Steven Spielberg films on this list, Schindler’s List is so drastically different than Jurassic Park: The Lost World that I believe it works—especially considering how fantastic this 1993 movie is. The Oscar-winning Schindler’s List tells the tale of Oskar Schindler (played by Liam Neeson), who tries to protect his factory of Jewish workers as the Nazi party exterminates millions of prisoners.

Sinister

Years before Scott Derrickson joined the Marvel family and directed Doctor Strange, he made his mark with the low-budget horror flick Sinister. Starring Ethan Hawke, this indie film won the praise of both critics and horror movie fans alike. The movie follows Hawke’s character Ellison—a true crime novelist who hasn’t written a hit book in over ten years. He then decides to tackle a new mystery that takes him down a dark and dangerous path.
