3 Ways Blackpink Made History On The World Songs Chart This Week

As fans wait to hear new music from Blackpink, one of the most talented, hardworking and successful all-female groups in the K-pop industry, the band hits a very special milestone this week on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart with what may end up becoming their greatest hit yet, “Kill This Love.”

The song has now charted for a complete year (52 weeks), and in doing so, the tune has made history in a number of ways.

Third K-Pop Song From A Girl Group To Chart For A Year

Blackpink’s “Kill This Love” is now just the third K-pop song by a girl group to spend at least one year on the World Digital Song Sales chart, which is tough to believe considering there have now been at least 20 tunes performed primarily in Korean that have done so when all acts are included.

The first song by a Korean female band to spend a full 52 weeks on the chart was 2NE1’s “I Am the Best,” which remains the only cut to live on the tally for two years. Blackpink’s previous smash “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” has also reached this special milestone.

The Only Girl Group With Two Year-Charters

As is noted just above, Blackpink has now produced two singles popular enough to spend at least a year on the World Digital Song Sales chart, which is something that has never happened before. Only two female bands have scored smashes big enough to live on the ranking for 52 frames, and now Blackpink is the first to manage the feat twice, and there’s no reason to believe they won’t do so again when they have new music to deliver.

The Third Act To Chart More Than One Song For A Full Year

Looking at all groups and solo musicians who send K-pop cuts to the World Digital Song Sales chart, the group of names who have managed to keep at least two songs on the list for a year expands to just three acts.

Psy’s “Gangnam Style” and “Gentleman” have both spent over 100 weeks on the tally apiece, with the former holding as the longest-charting Korean track in the history of the ranking and the only one to rack up over 300 turns on the chart.

BTS may not claim the longest-charting K-pop tune on the World Digital Song Sales chart, but they have snagged the most longstanding winners. The superstar septet has now kept an incredible 11 different releases on the roster for at least 52 weeks, and they are about to make that an even dozen in a very short time when their recent smash “Boy with Luv” hits that mark as well.
