3 Ways BTS’s Suga Made History On The Song Sales Chart Last Week

As a member of BTS, rapper, singer, songwriter and producer Suga has appeared on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart—the weekly ranking of the bestselling individual tracks in the U.S. every week—more than 30 times. It’s not surprising to see the group return to the list whenever they have new music to share, but when the members appear on their own, it’s always special.

This frame, Suga returns to the Digital Song Sales chart as a featured guest on fellow Korean musician IU’s new single “Eight,” which launches at No. 13. By appearing on the ranking once again, Suga has earned new spots in the chart annals and shows he has a solid following of his own.

One Of Only Four Solo Korean Male Musicians To Chart

With another song on the Digital Song Sales chart, Suga remains one of only four solo Korean male musicians to reach the list, and he is joined by three faces he knows very well. In addition to Suga, the only three other solo male Korean acts that have placed on the ranking at least once are fellow BTS members J-Hope, RM and V. All of them have appeared on the tally in the past year.

Fourth-Highest-Charting Song From A Solo Korean Male Musician

After less than half a tracking week in which to rack up sales, IU and Suga’s “Eight” still managed a very healthy sum, though had it been released on a Friday (when the new tracking frame begins), it could have performed much better. The track opens at No. 13 on the current Digital Song Sales chart, missing out on becoming a top 10 hit by only a few rungs.

A No. 13 peak makes “Eight” the fourth-highest-charting song from a solo Korean male musician in the tally’s history. V’s “Sweet Night” leads the pack, as it lost out on the top rung by just one spot, settling for the runner-up rung earlier this year. J-Hope and Becky G’s “Chicken Noodle Soup” opened at No. 9 last year, and Suga’s other charting success, “Suga’s Interlude” with Halsey and BTS (both BTS and Suga are credited separately, so it counts toward both of their career totals), made it to No. 10 this past December.

First Solo Korean Male Musician To Chart More Than Once

As is clear by the few song titles mentioned above, Suga is now the only solo Korean male musician to reach Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart more than once. Impressively, he went years without one placement on the list, and in just six months he has managed two, making history in the process.

Last December, his collaboration with Halsey and BTS, “Suga’s Interlude,” became the rare top 10 hit among Korean acts, and he almost replicated the feat with this latest launch. He has yet to score a truly solo hit.
