4 Ways BTS Made History On The Canadian Hot 100 When ‘Dynamite’ Debuted

When “Dynamite” arrived on the Canadian Hot 100 last week, it almost became the band’s first leader, missing the throne by a single spot. Coming that close to the peak position for the first time is surely a bit of a disappointment, but by landing at No. 2, BTS made history nonetheless.

In fact, this latest launch is already the biggest hit of the septet’s career in many ways, and they didn’t need the No. 1 to show how successful they can be immediately out of the gate with the right smash.

Here is a look at four ways BTS made history on the Canadian Hot 100 when “Dynamite” debuted last week.

Second-Highest-Charting Song By A South Korean Act

So far, only one South Korean musician has managed to rule over the Canadian Hot 100, though BTS almost became the second with their latest win. Nearly a decade ago, Psy conquered the all-genre list with his K-pop blockbuster “Gangnam Style,” which shattered barriers when it lifted all the way to No. 1.

By landing at No. 2, “Dynamite” instantly became the second-highest-charting tune by a South Korean musical act in the history of the Canadian Hot 100.

Highest-Charting Hit By A South Korean Group

It’s no surprise that after starting at No. 2, BTS’s “Dynamite” now stands as the highest-charting single by a South Korean group, especially since it only missed out on becoming the biggest smash by any act from the country by one rung.

Before last week, BTS and Nicki Minaj’s “Idol” held the record as the highest-charting tune by a band from the Asian nation. That cut, which once peaked at No. 5 a few years ago, now stands as the second-highest-charting cut from a non-solo musical act from South Korea, as the septet is only replacing their own best showings at this point.

Fifth Top 10 Hit By A South Korean Act

Amazingly, “Dynamite” is just the fifth top 10 hit on the Canadian Hot 100 by a South Korean musical act, as only a lucky few tunes have risen into the region, and they were released by just two figures.

BTS’s other smashes “Idol” with Minaj and “Boy With Luv” with Halsey both took turns inside the top 10, peaking at Nos. 5 and 7, respectively. Psy’s “Gangnam Style” spent some time at No. 1, while his follow-up single “Gentleman” stepped up to No. 9 for a short stay.

The Most Top 10 Hits Among All South Korean Acts

As is clear in the paragraph above, BTS has now collected three top 10 hits on the Canadian Hot 100, with “Dynamite” rounding out the trio of smashes. With another win in their discography, the seven-member vocal outfit passes Psy, who has just a pair of top 10s, to claim the most such placements among South Korean acts.
