5 Seconds Of Summer Beat Dua Lipa To No. 1 In The U.K. With New Album ‘Calm’

Throughout the past week, projections regarding which musician would claim the No. 1 spot on the U.K. albums ranking changed several times, and now a winner has been named. Australian pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer have come out on top, beating one of the biggest pop stars in the world, whose largest fan base is in the U.K., by a very narrow margin.

5 Seconds of Summer’s new full-length Calm debuts atop the Official Charts Company’s albums list, beating Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia by just 550 equivalent copies. That’s a tiny sum when talking about two titles that likely moved tens of thousand of units in their first tracking frame (complete sales data was not published).

The former pop-punk outfit (their sound has evolved throughout the years) has now reached No. 1 on the U.K. albums tally twice, including this latest win. Their only other chart-topper came in 2015 when Sounds Good Feels Good rose as high as a title can climb.

Two other full-lengths, a self-titled album released in 2014 and 2018’s Youngblood, have also spent time inside the top five on the chart, peaking at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

The first three singles pushed from Calm all made a commercial impact in the U.K. on the songs chart, though each subsequent release stalled lower on the ranking than the previous. First up was “Easier,” which once jumped into the top 40, landing at No. 27. “Teeth” came next, and it rose as high as No. 46, and earlier this year, “No Shame” worked its way to No. 68.
