6 Atlanta Police Officers Charged After Viral Video Showed Couple Yanked From Car

TOPLINE

Six Atlanta police officers face criminal charges, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced Tuesday, after a video surfaced of the police pulling two college students out of a car during Saturday night’s protests, with one tased despite seemingly not resisting.

KEY FACTS

Arrest warrants have been issued for Lonnie Hood, Roland Claud, Armond Jones, Willie Sauls, Mark Gardner and Ivory Streeter, the latter two of whom have been fired over the incident.

Four of the officers have been charged with aggravated assault, and one with aggravated battery.

Howard is giving them until June 5 to turn themselves in.

Messiah Young, 22, and his girlfriend, Teniyah Pilgrim, 20, were taken into custody after the 9 p.m. curfew went into effect.

CBS46 cameras broadcast live on television as officers stopped the young black couple’s car.

Neither Young nor Pilgrim seemed to be resisting, but officers broke the car’s windows, tasing Young and forcing them to the ground, before handcuffing the two with zip ties.

Young suffered a fracture of his wrist and received 24 stitches for a large cut.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Pilgrim was released without charges and that Young was released as well and will have his charges dropped.

Critical quote:

“I feel a little safer now that these monsters are off the street and no longer able to terrorize anyone else,” said Messiah Young.
