A New Netflix Show Has Unseated ‘Space Force’ For The #1 Spot

Well, its reign lasted exactly a week, but Space Force has now lost its #1 spot on Netflix to a returning original series this week. That would be season 4 of 13 Reasons Why, far and away probably Netflix’s most controversial original series, given the severity of the issues it deals with regarding every possible horror of teenage life.

This is the final season of 13 Reasons Why, which was based on an original book and yet went far beyond the source material once it became a hugely popular series and Netflix decided that it had more stories to tell. Subsequent seasons may have not been quite as headline-grabbing as the first, and yet they have brought controversy with them all the same.

Space Force has nothing to worry about, however, as it remains in the #2 spot, ahead of the Jeffrey Epstein documentary, Fuller House’s last season and Avatar: The Last Airbender, which I am happy to still see in the top 10 despite being 15 years old and arriving on Netflix all the way back on May 15th. That is a truly impressive amount of time to stay on the top 10 list for any show, though I suspect it has an advantage with 60 episodes people need to watch as opposed to the usual 10 we see for new shows or seasons on Netflix.

As I’ve said before, I think that any show that makes a significant impact in Netflix’s top 10 list will get renewed, depending on extenuating circumstances. Of the shows there now, I believe Space Force and Sweet Magnolias, both new series, will get second seasons due to their performance. Fuller House and 13 Reasons Why will not, because it’s been stated outright that these are the final seasons for both. Avatar is in its own category completely, but we know that Netflix has previously greenlit a live-action adaptation of the series with the original creators on board that they are no doubt eager to get started on after seeing how popular the show has been on their service. And I hope this means that Netflix will work to secure the rights to air the follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, which is almost as good.

I have not watched 13 Reasons Why since season 1, so I won’t tune in for season 4 any time soon. I did finally make it through all of Space Force this weekend, which I did not particularly enjoy, though I did find that its dramatic moments worked better than its comedy. I would certainly check out a second season to see if improvements could be made, and I have no doubt that will likely be the case to some extent. I’d expect an announcement about Space Force (and possibly Sweet Magnolias) getting renewed pretty soon here.
