AEW Dynamite Results: News, Notes As Mike Tyson Is Announced For Double Or Nothing

AEW featured an action-packed show with a small-but-mighty crowd as The Inner Circle attacked Vanguard 1 with a baseball bat after Jericho challenged The Elite to a “Stadium Stampede” match inside the 80,000-seat TIAA Bank Field at Double or Nothing.

The big news of the night was the announcement that boxing legend “Iron” Mike Tyson will appear live at AEW Double or Nothing to present the TNT Championship to either Cody or Lance Archer.

Last week’s broadcast of AEW Dynamite garnered 732,000 viewers, outpacing WWE NXT which garnered just 663,000.

Opening Segment Featuring Cody, Lance Archer and Jake “The Snake” Roberts

Lance Archer attacking a random during his entrance is quickly making his entrance among the best in pro wrestling.

Jake Roberts has gone full “let’s see if I can get cancelled” heel and it’s glorious.

Despite being 6’1, Cody has the same sensibility in vehicles as most men who are under 5’7 with a Napoleon Complex.

Orange Cassidy should wear a mask even after this pandemic is over. It just fits him and the character since face masks are essentially sunglasses for the mouth.

That Awful Waffle finisher is never not impressive.

Hikaru Shida vs. Kris Statlander, Penelope Ford and Britt Baker

Do No. 1 Contendeships expire after 30 days the same way a championship must be vacated when it isn’t defended for 30 days?

Jim Ross was hilarious in his indignation to Penelope Ford and Kip Sabian’s mid-match make out. (”Get a room ,will ya?”)

This match was slow and deliberate, almost as if to accompany a field of mostly green wrestlers.

Jim Ross was sure to note that “all women generally hate each other,” and I don’t think he was being ironic.

Kenny Omega and Matt Hardy def. Proud and Powerful

Jim Ross is already beginning to get cranky and facetious while having to pretend like Matt Hardy has multiple personalities.

I don’t know if noise is being piped in, but it sounds like more and more people attend these tapings with every passing week. Those “Kenny” chants did not sound like a lot more people than essential staff.

Matt Hardy is no Hangman Adam Page at this stage of his career, but he and Kenny Omega are developing into a very solid tag team.

MJF def. Lee Johnson

I never knew “open contracts” were a thing in pro wrestling.

MJF wrestling Marko Stunt is actually a wise move since Stunt is a smaller athlete with a body type similar to Jungle Boy, though on a much smaller scale.

Chris Jericho def. Pineapple Pete

Pre-Match Thoughts: I fully expect Chris Jericho to lose this match, and if he does, it won’t hurt him one bit.

Tony Schiavone went on a limb and noted this was the biggest match of Pineapple Pete’s career.

AEW used comedy—via Jericho taking random shots at Pineapple Pete on commentary—to build to a match that actually ended up being quite the serious athletic competition until it ended one minute in. I loved it.

Watching Jericho smash Vanguard 1 felt like watching Earthquake squash Damien.

Brodie Lee def. Christopher Daniels

Stealing world championships is a highly effective, if not underutilized heel tactic.

Christopher Daniels actually makes far more sense as a first pay-per-view opponent or Brodie Lee, whose AEW pay-per-view debut is almost certain to end in defeat. All those kickouts at one—and the announcer’s reaction to it—really helped make Brodie Lee look like a monster, however.
