Alabama Coach Nick Saban Tests Positive For Covid

Topline

Alabama football coach Nick Saban has tested positive for Covid-19, along with University of Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne, in a massive jolt that will take the highest-paid coach in college football away from the sidelines.

Key Facts

Saban and Byrne both received positive tests Wednesday and have now entered self-isolation.

Saban, 68, said in a statement that he is not feeling any symptoms, while Byrne, 48, did not specify his condition.

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will take over in-person football activities while Saban continues to work from home, Saban said.

Key Background

Saban is widely considered to be among the greatest college football coaches of all time, personally winning six national championships, including five at Alabama in the past 11 seasons. Saban is also the highest-paid coach in college football, according to a USA Today study released Wednesday, which listed his total annual compensation at $9.3 million.

What To Watch For

Alabama is currently ranked No. 2 in major college football polls, behind Clemson. They are set to host No. 3 Georgia in a massive matchup on Saturday night. A 14-day quarantine period for Saban would mean he also wouldn’t be on the sidelines for the team’s Oct. 24 game at Tennessee.

Crucial Quote

“I found out earlier this afternoon that I had tested positive for COVID-19. I immediately left work and isolated at home,” Saban said. “At this time, I do not have any symptoms relative to COVID.”

Tangent

Saban’s positive test is the latest jolt to the sporting world, and the second major shakeup in Southeastern Conference football on Wednesday alone. Earlier in the day, the SEC announced that Saturday’s LSU-Florida game would be postponed because of a coronavirus outbreak in the Florida program. Saban’s positive test also comes just a day after soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo tested positive for Covid.
