All The Times Joe Biden Told People Not To Vote For Him

TOPLINE

Former Vice President Joe Biden said in an MSNBC interview on Thursday that Americans who believe Tara Reade’s allegations of sexual assault against him probably shouldn’t vote for him—which follows a long pattern of Biden telling people not to vote for him.

KEY FACTS

November 8, 1979: While stumping for Democratic candidate Joe Mangini in a Delaware General Assembly special election, then-Senator Biden told voters, “take a look at him. If you like what you see, vote for Joe. If not, vote for the other guy.”

April 16, 1987: During his 1988 presidential campaign, Biden told a group of voters at a campaign event in Iowa “please look me over,” and that if they don’t like what they see, to “just vote for the other guy” (he said it again at an event on June 9).

July 2, 2007: During his second run for president, Biden once again told voters in Iowa, “if you like what I say, vote for me. If you don’t, vote against me.”

March 23, 2012: While campaigning for Obama’s reelection, Biden told a crowd in Florida, “when you look at Barack and me, when you look at our opponents, take our measure,” and then recited a familiar refrain, “if you like what you see, vote for me. If not, vote for the other guy.”

August 24, 2019: Biden, 77, responded to voters’ concerns about his age by declaring, “I say if they’re concerned, don’t vote for me,” to a group of reporters in Keene, N.H.

November 22, 2019: When Carlos Rojas, an immigration activist, pressed Biden at an event in November on the issue of deportations during the Obama administration, Biden told Rojas, “you should vote for Trump.”

January 29, 2020: Environmental activist Ed Fallon confronted Biden on his climate positions, and Biden responded, “you have to go vote for someone else. You’re not going to vote for me in the primary.”

May 14, 2020: Biden said in an MSNBC interview that voters who believe Tara Reade’s allegation that he sexually assaulted her in 1993 “probably shouldn’t vote for me” and should instead “vote their heart,” adding “I wouldn’t vote for me if I believed Tara Reade.”

Chief Critic

Fallon, who had told Biden he would vote for him in the general election, said of his encounter, “I did not expect to be told to leave, to go vote for somebody else.” He called the interaction, in which Biden poked Fallon’s chest, “not appropriate,” and cautioned that telling progressive voters not to vote for him is a deleterious campaign strategy. “I don’t think he can beat Trump and you have him actively telling people like me, ‘Don’t vote for me, vote for somebody else.’ Well, that’s not helpful, not helpful at all,” he said.

Tangent

Biden had another heated confrontation with a voter in December which landed him in hot water. When an Iowa farmer attacked Biden for his age and his son’s business activities in Ukraine, and said he wouldn’t vote for him, Biden shot back, “Well, I knew you weren’t, man. You think I thought you’d stand up and vote for me? You’re too old to vote for me.” But that’s not what got Biden in trouble. Critics instead seized on what appeared to be Biden telling the voter “look, fat,” though Biden claims he said “facts.”

News Peg

Biden’s latest statement has the potential to alienate a bloc of voters who are at least considering voting for him in November. A Monmouth poll found that 20% of Democrats and say Reade’s allegation is probably true. But 94% of Democrats in that poll say they prefer Biden over Trump in the election, meaning there is surely some overlap between voters who believe Reade and voters who are backing Biden.
