Amazon May Remove ‘The Dukes Of Hazzard’ From Streaming Service Over General Lee’s Confederate Flag Design

The Dukes of Hazzard was one of the more popular comedies from the 1980s, but it may soon be taken down from Amazon
AMZN
’s IMDb TV streaming service, according to multiple reports.

Amazon executives are now evaluating whether to remove The Dukes of Hazzard from IMDb TV because of its depiction of the Confederate flag painted on the show’s General Lee race car, Vulture and Variety are reporting. No decision has been made, according to the reports, but if Amazon executives decide to make the move, the show’s seven seasons could be immediately removed.

The possible decision comes as major companies and organizations are rethinking their policies on content following the tragic death of George Floyd last month and subsequent protests across the country.

Earlier this week, AT&T
T
’s WarnerMedia temporarily removed Gone With the Wind from its HBO Max streaming service because of its depiction of racism. In a statement, WarnerMedia said it would bring the film back to HBO Max, but “with a discussion of its historical context.”

Also this week, NASCAR announced that it would ban anyone from displaying the Confederate flag at races, saying that it “runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry.”

The Confederate flag features prominently in The Dukes of Hazzard, making it necessary for Amazon to remove the entire series, if it decides to remove the show at all. Other content providers have in the past removed parts of shows or episodes where inappropriate content was produced. In The Dukes of Hazzard, however, General Lee is in each episode.

If Amazon decides to pull The Dukes of Hazzard, it wouldn’t be the first time the show has been taken down. In 2015, Warner Bros. said it would stop licensing General Lee replicas with the Confederate flag on it. TV Land also stopped running The Dukes of Hazzard reruns in 2015 because of the Confederal flag.

To be clear, the show is not available on Amazon’s main streaming service Prime Video. IMDb TV is an ad-supported streaming platform with generally older and less-well-known content. It’s currently working on original programming to boost its appeal.
