‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Has Landed On Netflix, And Everyone On Earth Should Watch It

I’m not sure why it took this long, as Avatar: The Last Airbender has been on Netflix in other countries for a long while now, but it has now finally landed on the service in the US as of this weekend.

Despite this being one of my favorite shows of all time, the Netflix algorithm does not seem to be able to detect that, and I actually had to search for it in the app rather than it recommending it to me anywhere on the front page. So perhaps this debut is going to be overlooked considering the age of the show and the fact that it’s animated (I suppose I don’t watch that many animated series on Netflix).

If you are reading this, and you have not watched the show yet, I am going to need you to get over the fact that it’s an animated series that originally aired on Nickelodeon. I know that makes it sound like it’s for kids, but I promise you it’s not, and the series is genuinely an all-time classic no matter your genre interests or your age.

Avatar tells the story of a world where various nations have citizens that can control the elements of air, fire, water and earth. There is one person alive at a time, the Avatar, that can control all four and bring balance to the world. This is the story of a newly found Avatar, Aang, who is just a kid, and his journey to control all four elements, aided by water tribe members Katara and Sokka, as the Fire Nation threatens to take over the world.

The result is a series that works as both a character drama and more or less as a superhero series as well. I found myself constantly asking questions about the logistics of the powers that were answered and explored by the show in short order. Isn’t there water in the human body and in plants? (Just wait). Aren’t there earth elements in metal? (Just wait).

The show spawned a follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, which is also great in its own ways, though the original series is what most would consider superior in the end (even if Korra is my favorite character in this universe overall). That’s not yet on Netflix, but if I had to guess, it probably will be soon.

I know that this is probably going to be outside the comfort zone of a lot of people, but watch a string of season 1 episodes and just try to get into it. Yes, it’s a decade old Nickelodeon show originally made for kids, but it’s so much more than that and you are in for a treat if you stick with it for the whole journey.
