‘Away’ Is Seconds Away From Achieving This Incredible Streak On Netflix

In the year 2020, movie culture has had to make a lot of adjustments. COVID-19 has not only shuttered theaters across the country and delayed several movies indefinitely, but we’ve also been forced to turn to the digital realm to gauge which movies have been the most viral and successful. And a lot of that attention has been placed on Netflix—easily the most popular streaming platform on the planet.

Well, over the past nine days, Away has commanded Netflix like few shows ever have. And now that show is on the verge of accomplishing a significant milestone on the streaming service.

We know this thanks to Netflix’s newly established Top 10 feature. Each day, Netflix updates this rotating list with the most popular movies and TV shows available in its digital library. And over the past nine days, Away has claimed the #1 spot on that list.

And if the Hilary Swank drama can push that streak to ten days? Then the show join a very exclusive list of projects that have managed just a feat.

Here are the current longest #1 streaks for shows on Netflix:

  1. Tiger King – 27 days
  2. The Umbrella Academy – 15 days
  3. 13 Reasons Why – 14 days
  4. Unsolved Mysteries – 12 days
  5. Floor is Lava – 12 days
  6. Dead to Me – 10 days
  7. Cobra Kai – 9 days
  8. Away – 9 days
  9. Space Force – 7 days
  10. Lucifer – 7 days

If Away can keep up this streak for just one more day, then it’ll become just the seventh show to complete a 10-day streak in 2020. That’s a feat that several other shows on Netflix—including incredibly popular programs like Ozark, Outer Banks, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Love is Blind, Space Force and The Office—have not been able to replicate.

On top of that, just about no other movie has been able to match such a streak. Only two movies (Spenser Confidential and Project Power) have managed ten consecutive days in the #1 position.

Over the past few months, several other shows have approached such a streak. While The Umbrella Academy saw 15 consecutive days in the #1 spot, several other shows have just missed out on that 10-day streak as of late, including Lucifer and Cobra Kai (a show whose streak was upended by Away).

And thanks to that rare performance, Away is quickly emerging as one of Netflix’s most successful projects ever.

Thanks to the Top 10 list, we’ve been able to put together a points-tracking system that allows us to measure each and every show and movie against one another. And on the 2020 list, Away already sits in 34th place behind projects like Hollywood, Altered Carbon and Money Heist.

The Swank drama will undoubtedly continue to move up that list, as the show has garnered 108 points of the possible 110 points available in the 11 days since its premiere.

Needless to say, Away is on the verge of achieving a significant feat on Netflix. Based on that list I showcased earlier in the article, a 10-day streak is telling of a movie or show’s virality on Netflix—a network that hopes to drive people to its platform with unique and interesting tales. Which means that we will likely get another season of (and more shows like) Away.
