The Tower Knight in Demon’s Souls is far from the game’s most challenging bosses. But it’s a cool fight that takes place in one of my favorite areas in the game—the Boletarian Palace—and it’s one of the first you’ll encounter, after a long run down a precarious bridge.

The Tower Knight himself is an indomitable figure. He’s nowhere near as grotesque, quick or deadly as some of the later bosses, though he should give you more of a challenge than his predecessor, the Phalanx.

The fight itself takes place in a gatehouse at the end of a bridge, and includes a number of smaller enemies that you’ll want to dispatch before taking on the Big Bad. I have fond memories of encountering the Tower Knight for the first time, but fonder of my second Demon’s Souls playthrough, since by then I was a much better player and took him down on my first try. (It’s been years since I played this game but I’m going to dust off ye olde PS3 to play it again now that the PS5 remake has been announced).

In any case, we can get a good glimpse of what this gargantuan knight will look like in the PlayStation 5 remake. Here’s the new screenshot via Souls lore-master VaatiVidya:

Good grief but that’s gorgeous. Honestly, I still think the PS3 version of this game looks great, but this is leaps and bounds better, with much higher quality textures and lighting, while not sacrificing any of the atmosphere that made the original so special.

The player character here is wearing the iconic Fluted Set. It’s the armor worn in the original trailers for the game, and I love it. This and the Elite Knight armor set in Dark Souls are two of my favorites—not because they’re the most original or best, but because they satisfy that “Knight Simulator” craving I suppose I have. Wearing the Fluted Set, wielding sword-and-board, I’m a lonesome hero of some lost chivalric era overrun by demon’s and fell beasts, venturing forth into the fogs of Boletaria.

I know. I’m going full fanboy here—full dork, whatever. I don’t care. Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne remain my favorite games ever made (and Sekiro, though to a lesser extent, though I’ll save those musings for another time). If you missed the PS3 version, play the remake. Frankly, the PS3 version was reason enough to own a PS3, and one of the reasons I’ve held on to mine (and basically the only reason I get it out from time to time).

Demon’s Souls launches on PS5 sometime in the future. I can’t wait. Here’s the new trailer once more for good measure:
