Best And Worst Quarterback Depth Charts In NFL

With free agency and the draft wrapped up and teams’ 90-man rosters mostly set, here are the best and worst quarterback depth charts in the National Football League.

Best

New Orleans Saints: For the second consecutive year, this mantle belongs to the Saints. Drew Brees is one of the great quarterbacks in NFL history. He’s No. 1 all-time in passing yards, touchdown passes and complete percentage. Amazingly, he led the NFL in passing yards in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and completion percentage in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

He’s backed up by Swiss Army knife Taysom Hill, who does everything but sell game programs. And with Teddy Bridgewater getting a chance to start in Carolina, the Saints signed free-agent Jameis Winston. Winston led the NFL in interceptions last season but he also led the league in passing yards. He will have a chance to salvage his career if he can learn from a legend. No team can get close to matching this trio.

“Being a part of the New Orleans Saints, being a part with Drew Brees, Taysom Hill, Sean Payton, coach Joe Lombardi, coach Pete Carmichael – when you think about that room, that’s like a Harvard education in quarterback school,” Winston said in an Instagram Live video. “I wanted to put my ego aside, put the money [aside], think about my family, think about my career. [There] was no better position than to be in the same room with someone that I’ve really looked up to, someone that I’ve admired since I’ve been playing this game in Drew Brees.”

Runners-up: With perhaps the best player in the game in Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs have a competent backup in Chad Henne. Once first-rounder Tua Tagovailoa wins the job in Miami, the Dolphins will have the game’s best backup in Ryan Fitzpatrick. Blaine Gabbert was a first-round flop but he has a lot of experience should something happen to Tom Brady in Tampa Bay.

Worst

New England Patriots: Once upon a time, the Patriots had Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo. Now, it’s Jared Stidham and Brian Hoyer. Presumably, coach Bill Belichick will add someone to the mix; the Bengals released Andy Dalton on Thursday morning. Utah State’s Jordan Love was on the board with New England on the clock in the first round last week but Belichick traded down, instead. Stidham, a fourth-round pick last year, is 2-of-4 passing for 14 yards with one interception in his brief career.

“We spent quite a bit of time with both Brian (Hoyer) and Stid,” Belichick said before the draft. “I think we have a pretty good — (offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels) and myself — we have a pretty good feel for both of those players. Circumstances will be different this year. We’ll see how everything plays out, but again, to start with, I think the main thing is to give everyone a chance to compete, to get people comfortable with the position and the skills that they’re playing, the communication that’s involved.”

Runners-up: Washington has Dwayne Haskins, Kyle Allen and Alex Smith on its depth chart. A first-round pick last year, Haskins was awful (58.6 percent; 76.1 passer rating). Maybe Smith can recover from a gruesome leg injury that required an unfathomable 17 surgeries to repair. The Bears added Nick Foles to challenge Mitch Trubisky. Will Foles play like the Super Bowl champion he was with the Eagles, or will he play like the quarterback who went 0-4 with the Jaguars as a high-priced free agent? The Seahawks don’t have anybody behind Russell Wilson. Almost literally. The only other quarterback on the roster is undrafted rookie Anthony Gordon.
