Biden Condemns Violence On Left And Right ‘Unequivocally,’ Challenges Trump To Do Same

TOPLINE

Former Vice President Joe Biden issued his strongest condemnation yet of violence in Portland, Oregon, amid allegations by Republicans that he has not gone far enough, specifically condemning violence on both sides of the political spectrum and challenging President Trump to do so as well.

KEY FACTS

Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) have both repeatedly condemned protest violence in recent days as tensions have heightened in Portland, Kenosha, Wisconsin, and elsewhere in the aftermath of the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

But Republicans have continued to demand more from the Democratic ticket, with the Trump campaign putting out a statement on Sunday slamming Biden for saying he wouldn’t deploy the National Guard to quell protests and for using the term “peaceful protesters” to refer to demonstrators in Portland.

Biden rolled out an even firmer statement on the violence on Sunday, calling the violence in Portland “unacceptable” and stating, “I condemn the violence unequivocally,” adding “whether on the left or the right.”

“I challenge Donald Trump to do the same,” Biden added, possibly taking aim at Trump for applauding a caravan of his supporters who were caught on video tear gassing protesters and shooting them with paintballs and for not immediately condemning Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old Trump supporter charged with homicide for shooting protesters in Kenosha.

As partisan violence worsens in cities across the country, Biden warned of the U.S. becoming “a country at war with ourselves,” and accused Trump of “fanning the flames of hate.”

“The job of the President is to lower the temperature,” Biden declared, asserting, “The temperature in the country is higher, tensions run stronger,” and concluding, “Donald Trump can’t do the job.”

Key Background

Biden has frequently framed his campaign as a crusade to “restore the soul of the nation,” with his campaign announcement video taking aim at Trump’s response to violence at the Charlottesville protests in August, 2017.

Crucial Quote

“He may believe tweeting about law and order makes him strong – but his failure to call on his supporters to stop seeking conflict shows just how weak he is,” Biden’s statement says of Trump. “He may think that war in our streets is good for his reelection chances, but that is not presidential leadership – or even basic human compassion.”

Chief Critic

Conservatives were quick to cast the statement as toothless and platitudinous for not featuring specific calls for punishment. “Another Biden statement condemning violence in the abstract but refusing to support the police, call for arrests, demand prosecutions and jail sentences, etc — you know, the stuff that actually stops violence,” Washington Free Beacon contributor Noah Pollak tweeted, claiming that Biden “is afraid of alienating Dems who hate law enforcement.” Though Biden said in July that violent and lawless protesters should be “found, arrested and tried.”
