Biden Endorsed By Three Former RNC Communications Directors, Asian GOP

Topline

Three former communications directors for the Republican National Committee said they’ve voted for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden while the National Committee of Asian American Republicans (or Asian GOP) endorsed him on Monday, adding to the unprecedented bloc of prominent Republicans who have crossed over and endorsed the other party’s nominee.

Key Facts

Ryan Mahoney, who served as a senior adviser to the RNC and as its communications director under President Trump from 2017 to 2019, tweeted a photo of his ballot with Joe Biden bubbled in.

“Proud to vote country over party. Proud to vote for @JoeBiden,” added Mahoney, who previously tweeted an article by Ben Ginsburg, who has worked as an attorney for many Republican campaigns, critical of Republicans’ efforts to restrict mail-in voting.

Trevor Francis, who served in the same role in 2009, and Lisa Miller, who served in the role in 2007, told The Hill that they, too, voted for Biden rather than their own party’s nominee.

The Asian GOP, which backed Trump in 2016, said Trump’s rhetoric “sounds too familiar to many Asian American immigrants who came from places where authoritarians make themselves Godly above people legitimizing the obedience of their loyal subjects.”

“We need a president with empathy, integrity, and broadness capable of bringing all sides to the table to find common ground,” the group added, telling fellow 2016 Trump-voters “The future of our families, our communities, our great nation, and the World is at stake!”

Marc Racicot, who served as RNC chair in the first two years of the George W. Bush administration, and Michael Steele, who served in the role during the beginning of Barack Obama’s presidency, have also announced their support for Biden.

Key Background

Hundreds of prominent Republican former officials, strategists and commentators have endorsed or otherwise voiced support for Biden, a number unparalleled in a modern presidential election. Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former GOP mega donor Carly Fiorina, who both challenged Trump for the GOP nomination in 2016, have thrown their support behind Biden, as have former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and dozens of former GOP lawmakers.

Tangent

Another former RNC Communications director, Doug Heye, who served from 2009 to 2010, told The Hill he wrote in Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah.), who has also said he did not vote for Trump.

Crucial Quote

“You know, I’m not asking all these Republicans — I don’t even know half of ‘em they’re endorsing me,” Biden told WPXI, a local news affiliate in Pittsburgh. “Have you ever seen more Republicans endorse a Democratic challenger? Of their stature? Not just the Colin Powells. But 76 national security advisors coming out, I don’t even know them.”
