Biden To Call Trump ‘Weak’ For Refusing To Condemn Armed Militia At Protests

TOPLINE

Joe Biden will excoriate President Trump for abandoning “moral leadership” and fomenting violence in remarks he plans to deliver in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Monday, as the Democratic nominee looks to position his response to the social unrest that has swept the country over the shooting of Jacob Blake and the violence in Portland, Oregon, next to the president’s bombastic pleas for “law and order.”

KEY FACTS

According to excerpts of Biden’s speech that were released Monday morning by his campaign, the Democratic nominee will claim the president is incapable of stopping the violence that has swept cities across the country, because “for years he has fomented it.”

Trump “may believe mouthing the words law and order makes him strong,” Biden will say, but his inability to “call on his own supporters to stop acting as an armed militia in this country shows you how weak he is.”

In recent days, Biden has sought to rest the blame for the rioting and violence on Trump, and implored people to question whether they can be “safe in Trump’s America,” in an attempt to flip the narrative.

During the GOP convention last week, the president and his allies sought to tie Biden to the Democratic mayors in charge of cities where protests have broken out and repeatedly claimed, wrongly, that the Democratic nominee supports “defunding the police.”

Trump has lashed out at the mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler, and appealed for “law and order” after a man affiliated with a right-wing group was shot and killed in the city amid scuffles between Trump supporters and protesters.

The violence in Portland comes after days of protesting the shooting of Blake by a police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and after a 17-year-old was charged with fatally shooting two protesters.

Crucial quote

After being criticized for not more forcefully pushing back on the violence that has broken out in cities across the country, Biden condemned it on both the left and right “unequivocally” in a statement Sunday. “I condemn the violence unequivocally,” he said, “whether on the left or the right.”

Surprising fact

Protesters have demonstrated in the city of Portland for nearly 100 consecutive nights.

What to watch for

Biden will deliver the speech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 1:30 EDT Monday. Trump is expected to visit Wisconsin on Tuesday, even though Gov. Tony Evers (D-Wis.) has told him not to come.
