Blackpink Beat Their Own Record For Highest-Charting Hit By A Korean Girl Group In U.S. History

When Billboard refreshes the Hot 100 tomorrow, Blackpink will officially make history with their latest single, which has turned out to be an instantaneous smash hit in the U.S.

The quartet’s new release “Ice Cream” will open at No. 13 when the Hot 100 re-ups tomorrow, though the charting company and music magazine shared the good news on Twitter just a short time ago. That placement is an impressive debut for any just-released piece of music by any act, but for Blackpink, it’s truly a momentous appearance.

“Ice Cream” will instantly become the highest-charting track in history by a South Korean girl group when the chart returns, and in this instance, Blackpink is set to beat their own record. The No. 13 peak is 20 spots higher than any other cut fronted by or featuring an all-female troupe from the Asian country.

Before this week, Blackpink already owned the record for the highest-charting track by a South Korean girl group. In fact, they continue to raise the bar time and time again for acts that fit that description, as no other names from their field have risen to their level, at least not on the Hot 100.

Earlier this summer, Blackpink joined Lady Gaga on her promotional single “Sour Candy,” which previewed her new album Chromatica. That track lifted to No. 33, improving their best showing from their own “Kill This Love,” which once rose to No. 41. Just a few weeks later, the girl group matched their high point on the Hot 100 when their own “How You Like That” jumped to No. 33 as well.

“Ice Cream” serves as the second taste of Blackpink’s forthcoming debut album The Album, which is expected in early October. That full-length has already produced two top 40 wins on the Hot 100, making it a rare success when it comes to projects released by South Korean musical acts in the United States. The set could possibly spin off other charting hits, either with official singles or album cuts that fans buy and stream enough times to send to the all-encompassing tally.

Blackpink rise to a new high on the Hot 100 thanks to healthy sales, a sizable stream count and the inclusion of Selena Gomez, one of the biggest pop stars in America. Her presence surely helped bring her own fans to the table, and she may be part of the reason the tune was also a quick win on pop radio, where “Ice Cream” should debut inside the top 40 tomorrow.
