Blackpink Make History As The First Korean Girl Group To Chart A Top 10 Album In The U.K.

Blackpink’s star has been rising noticeably throughout the past year, and it has peaked this week, as their debut full-length The Album has finally arrived, and it has just started landing on charts all around the world. With every new territory that announces, the band breaks records and sets new best showings for acts just like them, and now they’ve made history in the U.K. with their new release.

The Album kicks off at No. 2 in the U.K. this week, coming in behind only Queen and Adam Lambert’s Live Around The World, a collection of live recordings from one of the most successful bands of all time in the country.

While Blackpink might not have snagged the top spot in the U.K., they still rise higher than any South Korean girl group ever has, and none have come even close.

With their runner-up placement, Blackpink best their own previous showing, as their 2019 EP Kill This Love only climbed as high as No. 40. That stood as the highest placement for an all-female vocal act from any country in Asia for the past year, but now the quartet has improved on their own performance, and they almost rose as high as a title can go.

Blackpink has been promoting The Album for months now, and thus far, the title has produced several hit singles. Lead cut “How You Like That” arrived in July, and it debuted and peaked at No. 20. Just two months later, they unleashed “Ice Cream” onto the world, giving fans the high-profile collaboration they’d been teasing for quite some time. The tune features pop superstar Selena Gomez, and it entered at No. 39.

This frame, The Album produces yet another top 40 hit on the singles chart, as new tune “Lovesick Girls” enters the race at No. 40.

Those three successful songs all helped The Album kick off its time on the tally as high as it managed to, but even if Blackpink hadn’t landed real smashes, the set probably would have performed similarly. The four-member band is massively popular all around the world, and their fan base is known to support them by purchasing everything they release the moment it’s available, so there was no question as to whether or not the act would land somewhere inside the top 10.

Blackpink is now the first South Korean girl group to reach the top 10, but they aren’t the only act from their home country when all types of musicians are included, as both BTS and member Agust D have also broken into the tier.
