Blackpink’s ‘Ice Cream’ Ties As The Third-Longest-Charting Song By A Korean Girl Group In U.K. History

On this week’s U.K. singles chart, Blackpink’s latest release “Ice Cream,” a collaboration with pop superstar Selena Gomez, dips once again, sliding backward from No. 72 to No. 77. That’s a small decline, and it shows that the cut will likely continue to step down bit by bit, taking its time falling off the all-genre ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the nation.

As the cut continues to work its way toward the bottom of the tally, it hits a new milestone, one which Blackpink has reached before, but one which is still meaningful.

“Ice Cream” has now spent five consecutive frames on the U.K. singles chart, which is enough for the poppy cut to tie as the third-longest-charting release by a South Korean girl group in the nation’s history. Unsurprisingly, the quartet match some of their own best showings, and in the coming frames, they will continue to beat themselves, as they remain far and away the most successful all-female K-pop act in the U.K.

The Selena Gomez-assisted tune is now on the same level as two other Blackpink hits in terms of length of time spent on the chart, and both of them were released in 2020 as well. “Sour Candy,” a collaboration with Lady Gaga and their own “How You Like That,” both managed five turns on the tally before vacating the list for good (at least for now).

One song with a South Korean girl group credited is far ahead of all others, and it will likely hold on to that lead, at least for the time being. Dua Lipa and Blackpink’s “Kiss and Make Up” once earned a total of 12 weeks on the U.K. singles chart. It remains the only tune to feature or be fronted by an all-female act from the Asian country to spend double-digit frames on the ranking.

Blackpink’s 2019 hit “Kill This Love” racked up half a dozen turns on the roster, and it stands alone as the second-longest-charting song by a South Korean girl group in U.K. history.

Looking at how slowly “Ice Cream” is falling, it will likely tie “Kill This Love” in just a few days when the Official Charts Company reissues its weekly ranking, and then it stands a good shot at advancing beyond that win. At this point, there’s no knowing how long the fan favorite will continue to find space somewhere on the tally, but it’s already become a huge win for the quartet and their fans.
