Blackpink’s ‘Sour Candy’ Is Now The Longest-Charting Dance Hit By A Korean Act In U.S. History

Most songs are lucky to spend just a few weeks on any Billboard chart, as it remains incredibly difficult to craft a tune that millions will want to buy, stream and hear on the radio long after they make their first big splash. This is true on nearly every list compiled by the company, and this time around one group makes history by keeping one of their most successful tracks on a ranking for another frame, managing something truly special in the process.

Blackpink’s “Sour Candy,” a collaboration with pop superstar Lady Gaga that served as a promotional single from her latest album Chromatica, is still going strong on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, the list of the most-consumed dance and electronic songs in the U.S. every week, proving its popularity yet again. This frame, the tune actually gains ground, lifting from No. 18 to No. 14 in its twenty-second turn on the tally.

With 22 weeks now spent on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs ranking, “Sour Candy” breaks the record as the longest-charting release by (or featuring) a South Korean musician. The tune tops the previous record holder, Psy and Snoop Dogg’s “Hangover,” by just one frame, at least so far. That cut lived on the dance-focused roster for 21 stints before falling off.

“Sour Candy” has now become a very important song in Blackpink’s discography, especially when looking at its performance on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The tune lifted all the way to No. 3 on the tally shortly after it arrived, making it the second-highest-charting title by a South Korean act (behind only Psy’s “Gangnam Style”) and the best-performing by a girl group…or any group, for that matter.

Seeing as it is still living inside the top 15 on the 50-spot Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, it’s unlikely that “Sour Candy” disappears anytime soon, and it may go on to rack up many more frames on the list before eventually being removed from the ranking. In fact, at the rate fans are still streaming and buying the catchy cut, it could one day double its present total number of weeks spent on the ranking, though it’s impossible to say right now exactly how long it will be present on the ladder.
