Michelle Bolsonaro, first lady of Brazil, which is struggling with one of the world’s worst coronavirus outbreaks, tested positive for the virus herself Thursday, days after her husband, President Jair Bolsonaro, said he had finally tested negative after being infected earlier this month.

KEY FACTS

Michelle was diagnosed Thursday, according to a statement from the president’s office, but was “in good health and will follow all established protocols,” it read.

She and her husband most recently made a public appearance on Wednesday in Brasilia at an event that Michelle posted about on her Instagram account.

At least one official, Tereza Cristina, agricultural minister, said on Twitter she would cancel her schedule after attending the event with the Bolsonaros to be tested as a precaution.

On Saturday, Michelle’s husband Jair announced he had finally tested negative for the virus after initially being diagnosed on July 7.

Michelle wasn’t the only one in the president’s circle to test positive Thursday—Marcos Pontes, one of Jair’s ministers, announced he too had been diagnosed, reportedly the fifth minister to test positive.

Key background

Coronavirus continues to ramp up in Brazil, which with 2.5 million cases and more than 90,000 deaths on Thursday according to Johns Hopkins University has been the most affected by the pandemic after the United States. Throughout the pandemic, Jair has minimized the threat of coronavirus in Brazil and argued against social distancing that he says is too dangerous for the economy, even after becoming infected himself.
