BTS’s ‘Dynamite’ Is The First-Ever Top 40 Radio Hit By A Korean Group In U.S. History

The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” returns to the No. 1 spot on this week’s edition of Billboard’s Radio Songs list, which ranks in order the most popular tracks across all kinds of radio stations in the U.S. The tune recently broke the record for the most frames in charge of the competitive tally, and it looks like it’s not done running the show.

Further down the list, three tracks enter the top 40 for the first time, with one helping the group behind it make history.

BTS’s latest single “Dynamite” surges from No. 42 to No. 39 this time around, entering the top 40 for the first time. The cut has now become a proper hit at radio in the United States, instantly becoming their first tune to appear inside the region which typically defines when a charting song becomes a real winner.

With their first radio top 40, BTS makes history as the first group from South Korea to reach the area. Somehow, despite the hits they’ve produced on the Hot 100, none of them have made inroads on the Radio Songs chart, but now they’ve crossed one more thing off their to-do list.

Thanks to the quick success enjoyed by “Dynamite” (it reaches the top 40 in its fourth frame on the tally, rising a few rungs every week), BTS is also just the second-ever South Korean musical act of any kind to find themselves inside the tier. Nearly a decade ago, Psy surprised many when his breakout hit “Gangnam Style” rose all the way to No. 12 back in 2012. That track still stands as the best-performing among all soloists and bands from the Asian nation.

“Dynamite” will surely continue to climb in the coming weeks, and at this point, there’s no telling how much further it will ascend. The cut has already topped the Hot 100 for three nonconsecutive turns, so there’s no more room for it to improve there, but radio typically takes longer to pick up on instant champions, so the future seems bright for BTS and their latest smash on the Radio Songs chart.
