California Retailers Allowed To Reopen For Pickup Orders As Early As Friday

TOPLINE

Some retail businesses in California, including clothing, bookstores and sporting goods stores, will be able to reopen as early as Friday for pickup orders only, California Governor Newsom announced Monday, as the state begins to move into the next phase of its reopening plan.

KEY FACTS

California clothing stores, bookstores, toy stores, music shops, florists, sporting goods stores and other retail businesses will be able to offer curbside pickup starting Friday, May 8.

Retailers, along with their associated manufacturing operations, will only be allowed to open with modifications that mandate workers physically distance themselves from each other, for example.

Offices, dine-in options at restaurants and shopping malls will remain closed.

Specific counties or regions, such as the Bay Area, with more stringent orders will be allowed to keep those in place. At the same time, parts of rural California may be able to open up further if they meet certain conditions, Newsom said.

Newsom said his office will release specific guidelines for stores to follow on Thursday.

Crucial quote

“This is a very positive sign and it’s only happening for one reason: the data says it can happen,” Newsom says. “But we recognize that as we begin to modify, additional community spread may occur. If that’s the case, and we do not have the capacity to control that spread, to trace that spread, to track that spread, to isolate individuals who may have been in contact with COVID-19, we will have to make modifications anew.”

News peg

States around the U.S. are beginning to reopen businesses, but some states have been more cautious than others. Texas, for example, allowed movie theaters, malls and restaurants to reopen with limited capacity, and Georgia permitted gyms, hair salons and bowling alleys to reopen under social distancing guidelines. Meanwhile, Michigan extended its stay-at-home order through May 15 while relaxing restrictions on golfing and boating. And in New York, a hotspot for the virus, Governor Andrew Cuomo indicated he will likely extend the state’s shelter-in-place order when it expires on May 15 for hard-hit areas such as New York City, Westchester and Long Island.
