Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion Give Away $1 Million To ‘Powerful Women’ To Promote ‘WAP’

Singers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion announced Tuesday that they’re partnering with Twitter and the Cash App to celebrate “powerful women” by giving away a total of $1 million following criticism of their “WAP” music video as crude.

KEY FACTS

After Megan Thee Stallion tweeted that women can enter the giveaway by sharing how the money will help them or someone they know and the designated hashtag, people quickly shared their stories and screenshots of their new Cash App balances on Twitter.

A number of Republicans have criticized the song, including Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who accused Biden of “sucking up” to Cardi B, called the song “garbage” and said, “it’s aimed at young American girls—maybe your girls, your granddaughters, and what is it doing to them?”

DeAnna Lorraine, who recently lost a Republican primary election in California tweeted that the singers “just set the entire female gender back by 100 years,” adding, “the Democrats support this trash and depravity!”

Cardi B interviewed former Vice President Joe Biden for Elle this week on a variety of issues, including the coronavirus pandemic, health care, higher education, racism and police brutality.

Cardi B had harsh words for Trump and Biden encouraged members of Cardi B’s young millennial fanbase to vote, noting that if a higher percentage had voted in 2016 Hillary Clinton may have won.

Cardi B previously supported Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (D-Vt.) presidential campaign and recently tweeted that she hopes Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) runs when she turns 35.

“I feel like Black people, we’re not asking for sympathy, we’re not asking for charity—we are just asking for equality. We are asking for fairness, and we are asking for justice. That is all,” Cardi B said in the interview.

Cardi B tweeted a video of Trump supporters dancing to the song and noted that Republican conservatives had thrown a “fit” about the song and that the supporters were violating social distancing rules.
