Citing Ratings Growth And Calling Itself ‘America’s Hispanic Superbrand,’ Univision Unveils 2020-21 Programming Slate

In a well-orchestrated 46-minute presentation, Univision kicked off its 2020-2021 virtual upfront presentation with an introduction and performance from Pitbull, singing “I believe we will win,” with lyrics that seemed to encapsulate the feelings of the moment we’re living in, hope for the future and how the media company fits in that narrative – of investing and rebuilding.

CEO Vince Sadusky, and the presidents of entertainment, Jessica Rodríguez, ad sales and marketing, Steve Mandala and sports, Juan Carlos Rodríguez, talked up the ongoing success of Univision’s programming over the past year, bolstered by the company’s “unique value proposition” for viewers and advertisers.

“We’ve been on a great ratings trend in entertainment, news, sports, local and digital,” stated Sadusky. “Overall, our portfolio of TV networks has been the fastest growing amongst all media companies, up 12% on an adults 18-49 basis and the only one growing among the highly sought out 18-34 demo.”

Jessica Rodríguez unveiled an entertainment programming slate that includes the return of reality competitions, popular Latin music tentpole award shows and the release of 11 new scripted titles, featuring partner Televisa produced adaptations of Turkish international hits, as well as telenovelas from Brazilian networks Record TV and Globo.

She also highlighted the success of sister network Unimás, which saw 45% growth this season vs last season, boosted by the hit interactive dating show Enamorándonos, which has generated a “huge social media following.”

Juan Carlos Rodríguez, recognized the challenges over the past few sports-less months due to the pandemic, noting “the world has changed, but not our love for sports,” as a preamble to announce that Mexican league Liga MX will start a new season in July and UEFA Champions League resumes in August.

Rodríguez declared that Univision through its diverse platforms “delivers 55% of all soccer viewing in the U.S., regardless of language” and announced the sports division will be producing 1,600 live games in 2021.

Sadusky, who will be leaving Univision after the sale of a 64% stake of the company closes in Q4, emphasized the executive team is focused on making a smooth transition for its new majority stakeholders, Searchlight Capital Partners and ForgeLight LLC.

“I have constant contact with them to make sure they’re fully informed,” he said. “The good thing about the time between the announcement and regulatory approval is that there is plenty of time for a new group coming in to appreciate the work that has been done.”
