Cleveland Browns ‘Take It Back To The Studs’ With New, Simpler Uniforms

Shortly after the 2019 season ended for the Cleveland Browns, there were already rumors swirling around the idea of what their new uniforms would look like. A rumor that turned out to be very substantial was the idea that the Browns would be returning to a more “traditional” look that the franchise was used to. If it was true, then this would end up being a source of relief for Browns fans who had to endure looking at their team wearing bad uniforms while simultaneously watching some less-than-ideal football at times. The rumor ended up being absolutely correct, as the Browns have indeed returned to a look that is more in line with the team’s historical uniform catalog.

At first glance, this appears to be very similar to the approach that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took with their new look — which was to simply kick their now-old uniforms to the curb in favor of going to a look that never failed them in the first place. There are still enough changes and new features here to say that this is a logical evolution for the Cleveland Browns and their uniforms, rather than it just being a simple move back to the past.

For starters, the helmets have been changed. You’re probably not going to notice the changes unless you get an up-close look at a Browns helmet yourself but the changes are there. There was a subtle faux carbon fiber pattern within the brown stripes running down the center of the helmet. That pattern is now gone and it’s now a plain brown stripe. A change like that may be tiny in the grand scheme of things but it’s emblematic of what this entire process was all about for the Browns. The team was clearly trying to “take it back to the studs” and eliminating unnecessary features like that (while also staying modern by retaining the brown facemask) was one of the ways that the team was trying to accomplish that particular mission.

As far as the jerseys go, they’re about as simple and plain as you’d expect from the Browns before they underwent their experimental look from a handful of years ago. The only new thing here is the lack of a wordmark under the collar and what appears to be a custom number and lettering font. It’s close to block lettering and numbering but it’s similar enough to where this appears to be a font that is wholly unique to the Browns. So while the design of the jersey appears to be very basic, the details are an example of the Browns trying to put a modern spin on things without getting out of control.

The new brown pants for the Browns are actually deceptively simple. While it looks like there’s just two orange stripes going down the sides of the pants, it’s actually meant to be three brown stripes with two orange stripes in between. This is meant to be consistent with the striping pattern that’s present on the jerseys. While the Browns will have the choice of wearing a traditional set of white pants with their white jerseys, it’s clear that the brown pants are the ideal complimentary look to the white jerseys, since the stripes are consistent from the jerseys down to the socks.

Meanwhile, the team’s Color Rush uniform is actually a stripped-down version of the previous Color Rush uniform that served as their primary home uniform in 2019. All of the stripes on the jerseys and pants are gone. The “BROWNS” wordmark below the collar is gone as well. Instead, there are just orange letters and numbers with the rest of the jerseys and pants being entirely brown. It’s a Color Rush uniform in its most basic form, as the focus of the uniform is clearly on the team’s shade of brown.

So while these uniforms could simply be written off as the Browns going back to their past, it’s clear that they didn’t just make the easy decision of returning to their old uniform design and calling it a day right then and there. Instead, it’s clear that there was some sort of effort here to pore over the details and make sure that this new uniform set wasn’t just the team hitting a reset button and going back to the past. Instead, the franchise made it clear that they wanted to honor their roots while also trying to move forward at the same time. The Browns accomplished that mission and now they look like the Browns again.
