Coronavirus Has Now Killed More New Yorkers Than 9/11

Topline: On Tuesday, health officials in New York City announced that at least 3,202 New Yorkers have died from coronavirus, overtaking the number of people who died in the city on 9/11. 

  • The 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 was the deadliest attack on the U.S. and killed 2,753 people in New York City, according to AP.
  • 2,977 people overall were killed by three hijacked planes that were flown into the two World Trade Center towers in Manhattan, the Pentagon in Virginia and a field in Pennsylvania.
  • Governor Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday that despite New York seeing more than 700 coronavirus deaths on Monday, the highest number recorded in a single day so far, social distancing measures are starting to pay off as, as new cases in the state have plateaued and new hospitalizations have declined significantly.
  • Two days ago, U.S. officials warned that Americans may see peaks in the coronavirus pandemic over the next few weeks.

Crucial quote: “This is going to be the hardest and saddest week of most Americans’ lives, quite frankly,” U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said on Sunday. “This is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it’s not going to be localized. It’s going to be happening all over the country. “

Key Background: The global epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, New York has a total of 138,836 confirmed cases, and saw its single biggest daily increase in coronavirus deaths on Monday with 731 reported cases. As of Tuesday, there were 1.3 million confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide, with more than 760,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
