COVID-19: Flights Resume In The UAE As Etihad Follows Emirates From April 5

With news yesterday that Emirates is set to resume some international flights from April 6, the second-largest UAE airline, Etihad, has also announced that they will be resuming some flights a day earlier on April 5.

Yesterday, authorities in the UAE gave Emirates permission to resume a limited number of fights from April 6, and now Etihad will follow suit in resuming some operations.

Initially, flights will transport people wishing to return to their countries of residence.

In a statement on Thursday, Etihad has said they will resume passenger flights to seven key destinations. the routes will be Seoul Incheon, Melbourne, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta and Amsterdam.

Etihad and Emirates have already been operating some special repatriation flights, and the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said specific flights were being granted permission so foreigners could leave the UAE. It added that suspension of regular passenger services, such as transit, remained in place.

The transportation of cargo including freight for the food security program has remained a key initiative in place despite the suspension of scheduled passenger flights since March 25.

A written statement from Etihad read: “All of these operations have been approved by the UAE Government and we continue to work closely with the authorities on the continuation of these types of operations, with a view to expanding the number of flights on the basis of approaches from a number of foreign governments.”

In a statement on Twitter yesterday, the Chairman of Emirates, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said: “Over time, Emirates looks forward to the gradual resumption of passenger services in line with lifting of travel and operational restrictions, including assurance of health measures to safeguard our people and customers. Their safety and well-being will always be our top priority.”
